Does this danger factor make plane spotting worthy of the label 'Extreme'?

Because the US has never prosecuted anyone for crimes committed elsewhere...

Is there a military facility at the airport? If not I can't see how noting down a few aircraft numbers could be a threat to national security, unless of course they are making an example of them.

I doubt it is but we know how they think here. You aren't allowed to photograph government buildings and with ISIS at the moment I suspect they are especially paranoid. I am not saying it's logical but any resident should know better.

I know what you mean but I still think this is over the top. Take a drive down the side roads next to DXB any night and you will see loads of plane spotters.

But it is a purely civilian airport with nothing sensitive flying there.

I cannot answer your questions about any military aviation activities in the UAE in a public forum.
