I don't think ther are many 'Lebs or Wogs' in NZ though.

I once read a book called "Once Were Warriors" about the lives of Maoris. Reminded me a lot of how American Indians have been treated and now exist as second-class citizens in the US.

Seems that getting pissed off about immigrants taking all "your" stuff is a luxury afforded to those who are not severely outnumbered by the immigrants.

[You see, I did bring the post back on-topic!]

BTW, what is a "Leb"?

Someone from Lebanon. Australia has a large number of Lebanese migrants.

And for anyone who doesn't know, a 'wog', in [derogatory] Australian terms, is someone from southern Europe/Mediterranean - typically Greek or Italian, but also Cypriot, Turkish, etc. Oz has a huge migrant population of southern Europeans. (I think 'wog' in the UK refers to black people, doesn't it?)

Actually, it seems there is a growing backlash against 'The Holidays' http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/Beliefs/story?id=1383107 with many more people wanting to know what on earth is wrong with saying Merry Christmas.
I seriously doubt anyone would be offended if someone said to them Happy Hannukah or Kwanzaa, I know I wouldn't. I would imagine most people of other religions who live in a predominately Christian country would not be offended by Christmas. IMO, it's only a small percentage of groups who are getting their knickers in a twist about avoiding offending anyone, and ironically they are Christians.

So, OP, first up there's the story in today's Queensland Mail about the teacher who has apologised for offending his pupils for his over-use of the word 'Christmas', following complaints. Then there's the story from last week's paper about the leading Islamic cleric who has called for Australia to end its use of the word 'Christmas' so as not to offend the high-number of non-Christians in the country. Last year it was all about cancelled nativity plays at schools and kindies. It may not yet be at the extent of that in the UK or US, but evidently, the sentiment is there, and many are unsure how to deal with it.

Here it is:

I am happy with my figures as I was responding to someone who said that I would have been safer staying in London since 2001 rather than flying to NZ. I feel that I have proved that I am in fact safer flying ONCE to NZ rather than travelling on the underground every day since then.

How about you put your husbands calculations on this thread for me to have a look at rather than just saying that I am wrong.

The word 'wog' derives from 'golliwog' and was originally directed at people from the Indian subcontinent in the 1950s in the UK, then people of black African origin. Many in Australia don't realise this. There was an effort to change the meaning to 'Western Orient Gentleman' several decades ago in Australia. Now people of southern mediteranean origin have taken much of the sting out of the term by using it themselves, as did African Americans with 'nigger', but the word 'wog' is used by white people too, mostly without offence apparently, except during yesterday's and last night's riots in Sydney.

Try buying a Christmas card with the word Christmas anywhere on it...you can't, it doesn't exist. I recieved a card from my mailman last week, it said Happy Holidays on the envelope. The card had a picture of Mary holding a baby Jesus, but the wording inside said something like "Season's Greeting during the Holidays" So even with a religious picture on the card, Christmas is still unmentionable  You can't even say Merry Christmas to someone here, for fear of causing offense....it has to be Happy Holidays  The kids have Holiday parties and Holiday cookies etc. Just substitute Holidays for whenever you would normally say Christmas.

I have to disagree with you somewhat regarding the US. I had no problem finding cards with "Merry Christmas" on them and there are quite a few places here where you can get cards that mention "Christmas." I do agree that the U.S. has tended to be a bit PC regarding Christmas, but here in SE Virginia there appears to be the beginning of a backlash. Just read in my local paper, Virginian Pilot, letters from a number of people stating that it's just plain silly saying "holiday" instead of "Christmas". One of the writers was Jewish and said he wasn't at all offended when people wished him a happy Christmas.

No, the word 'wog' is widespread here. Here is an example of how so called 'wogs' have taken the term as their own: www.wog.com.au
