Life in our little village just seems to get better, I was outside working and a local wandered by, we started chatting and 5 minutes later he invited me down to the pub to buy me a pint. He introduced me to a few of the other locals and on the way back I got chatting to a bloke restoring an old chapel. I cant get over the friendliness of the locals and fail to see all the long faces and misery I was warned about.

I've had people buy me pints in America.

Buying you one without the slightest expectation that you will buy one in return is the key don't you think, which is indeed how you alluded to it being in your post.

BTW, the USA actually has some truly awesome (pints??) these days even though they are not actually pints. Somebody stepping forward to buy you one is another matter.

I'm a bit late to contribute to the discussion on views but here's my twopenneth anyway. We had a fabulous view in Sydney, our house looked down into the a bush valley with a river snaking away into the distance. We bought the place very quickly once we had moved to Aus as we had a baby on the way & just loved that view! Unfortunately the house turned out to be very child-unfriendly & loads of other issues we hadn't appreciated at the time (flat metal roof in that climate being the main one!). But we still loved the view, me especially being a stay-at-home mum so I spent a lot of time with young baby gazing out the window.

However eventually we got used to it. I still worried about finding a house back in the UK a poor comparison as you tend to just see your garden & other houses & indeed with the place we are now in this is true. But an advantage is that I take more notice of the things close up, like the plants, trees & wildlife. And as the seasons change much more noticeably here there is more to see. But I do agree you do have to have a little bit of greenery or something to look at, not just the neighbours brick wall.
