On the subject of Stamp Duty I didn't think I would have to pay it being a first time buyer in UK. But no, this is not the case. The government says the following:

If you are a first-time buyer the threshold for when you start to pay SDLT is £250,000. This is only if you have never owned a house or flat in the UK or anywhere else in the world. If you are buying with someone else they must never have owned property before either. This higher threshold applies to purchases made on or after 25 March 2010 and before 25 March 2012

....so because I have owned property outside of the UK I have to pay SDLT.

My bank is charging the rate of 1.6622 for me to buy 1,000 pounds electronically and 1.5815 to sell 1,000 pounds into USD, so an eight cent spread no commission, which is what I would be expecting in the UK.

Yorkshire - terrible place cold and wet. People still live in stone houses for goodness sake, and the language. Will take you years to learn it. Go South if your looking to return

How would they know you have owned a property outside of the UK? I don't know how they could check that

Isn't it ironic... they won't use out-of-UK history for driving history, credit rating but when it comes to collecting taxes.....

You're right. Of course, I would be willing to bet that someone who had a pile on Malibu would have their own insights into tax breaks in other areas.
