Welcome Char...
I'm glad youve read from the start as it really helps put things in prospective, It really is better then a book, we may get off track for a while but we always return.
Ed is unreal, she's a tough lady and she will make it to the end of her journey intact, shes just that kind of person, we all admire her.
Ditto what Ed said, we just want to help and support each other, we do that every day.

Maybe they are scared you wont fit in, or that things will be different to what you remember, and more likely they just dont want you to leave, I think age has alot to do with the wanting to go back, you start to reflect on life and values change, you look at what the future holds, and the UK seems to offer alot.
Maybe Northern Ireland appeals even more to you now that its at peace, Im just guessing.

Thank you so much for your reply. Neither of my children is married. They are very successful. My son is gay and a psychiatrist at Columbia/Presbyterian in Manhattan. My daughter is a lawyer (hates it) also in New York. I think she would move to Ireland if I did. We are free spirits! My husband has two grandkids here in Dallas so it would be hard for him to leave. We have discussed living part time in both countries. His father came to the USA from Greece So he is eligible for a Euro passport.
I am an American Kennel Club dog judge and so fitting in with local breeders (of which I know many) would be easy. We go to Crufts every year. I grew up in Belfast and attended Queens, had one child before leaving in 1972 for Dallas. We returned once in 1985 for a few months before returning and ultimately getting divorced in 1991. Been remarried to an American since
1997. However I consider Belfast my forever home.

Re: OVER 50's & 60's MOVING BACK TO THE UK.
As we enter middle age, often we find our thoughts turning more often to our earlier lives (which I think is normal), but in our case this also means our thoughts turn more often to our native land...feelings of nostalgia surface in a way we never anticipated.
When young, busy with children and/or careers, still caught up in the adventure of settling in a new country, we may have thought of "home" much less.
Also for those of us in USA married to US citizens, there's the added problem that unhappiness in America, their country, can seem to threaten the whole relationship...I imagine this is the same if one's married to an Australian, or New Zealander, or whatever.
I actually recognized my own yearning for England very early on, and I'm afraid I didn't hesitate to give my husband a hard time about it!
And it has only become stronger with the years.
Luckily he likes England very much, and we have bought a tiny flat there so we have somewhere to stay without imposing on family, and a feeling of a base there which is hugely important to me....so I am lucky.
But like so many on this forum, I have adult children here, and have come to accept that I will be torn between the two countries for the rest of my life!

Welcome to the newcomers. What a great thread this is!
Charleygirl, last time I went home, I flew to London and then took the train to Leeds. I found it to be a wonderful experience and so easy. I had to get from Heathrow into London, then across town on the subway to King's Cross for the train to Leeds, but everything just ran like clockwork and it was all very comfortable. (The train from Heathrow was so new and beautiful compared to the trains we ride on here!)
Maybe you were just unlucky last time?

Actually Charleygirl, had a phone call today inviting me to interview for a position that I sent applied for in May, working in HR. Now the only problem is that I can't remember what the position was for, I think it had something to do with Health Care though. I will just have to wing it, I usually have everything written down, when, what and where I applied for jobs, but this was one I applied for before I got the Hotel one and I think I erased all that info I will be interviewing on Thursday morning, so if everyone can send me good thoughts and vibes at 0930 on that day, that would be wonderful.
