That's what I choose to do. And it does all boil down to perspective. Every bad moment does pass, we just think it is lasting an eternity when we are stuck in it. I believe everything is for a reason, it's our need to control it that spoils it for us.

I said all the above because I need to remember it myself too!! My two weeks here in Malta now have been a whirlwind! The first week was exciting - my sister here with me so we certainly did a ton of sightseeing, and Malta is fascinating, so much to see and do, so much history. Also very European, everyone outside, streets teeming with people going about their lives, or drinking a leisurely cup of coffee/tea at an outdoor cafe, speaking all languages under the sun (Maltese is completely incomprehensible to me!!). Now the second week, with my sister back in the UK, is bringing back all those anxieties on leaving my home and starting anew. Is this what I want to do, is this where I really want to be, what if I can't find work, what if I can't find a flat (which I have only just done today and who knows if I will like living in it?), what if I am penniless, what if I am all alone and no one understands me - how can I survive??????? All the natural worries that come with the territory that we expats have chosen for ourselves.

BUT, a big but, I am realizing that life is an adventure that I can either enjoy or feel depressed about. It is what I choose to make it - and the next 6 months here will definitely show me how courageous I am (or how crazy I am ), they will be filled with pain and with pleasure, and THAT IS OK. I will choose to laugh instead of cry and one day maybe I will still turn my life into the blockbuster movie I think it already is Remember everyone, we are all perfect in our imperfections, and we are not alone!!

Time will fly by, we can notice the good moments or the bad ones. So now I am going for breakfast and out into the Malta sunshine and the beautiful blue Mediterranean. What new adventure will I have today? I will try and post a photo or two soon........ciao ciao

Hi Anna

Great to hear from you. You are exactly right in what you are saying.
I hope all goes well in Malta but you do still have the UK if it doesn't. Only time will tell.
What ever happens just think of all the stories you will have to add to your book.

Enjoy yourself and what ever comes your way.

Take care Chris

Hi Anna, yes what you say about life in general is so true, life is what we make it, we can try and try to do our best in following our dream but unless we get the breaks it sure can be hard,
look at Peigi how hard she is trying, and she never gives up, but cant seem to catch a break, I hope things turn around for her soon, If anyone needs luck right now its her,
Anna you seem to be taking one day at a time and thats good, soon you may be able to get a Job and then things will be much better, if not then there is always UK to go back to, nice to have that choice,
As you say life is an adventure, and I dont know about you but with my date to return home draws closer and closer I am getting so excited to start my new life, you know looking back on all the years that I have been over in US and especially when I was young in the early days over here I cant remember ever being this full of life, its like a new hope for a new beguining is making me feel young and full of energy more then ever before, hard to explain this feeling,
Good luck Anna, and I truly hope everything goes well for you wherever you end up,
Rodney.

Thanks Rodney, and everyone else for being so supportive!! I know what you mean about feeling full of life, Rodney, you are about to start on a brand new journey and that can be exhilerating! You can feel very proud of yourself making this decision at this stage in your life!
Peigi ED, I do hope things work out for you, it must be really, really hard being away from your hubby for so long - I think not having that special someone there at the end of the day to talk to and hug can make things seem so much more difficult. The first day my sister left here to return to the UK, I wanted to cry and give up. But, I keep telling myself things are for a reason, and I am always looking for that silver lining in the dark cloud. Actually, not so hard to do here in Malta as we don't get any dark clouds in the sky!! A few hazy ones from time to time, but usually it's bright sunshine from dawn till dusk. That is definitely helping me to stay focused on being here for 6 months!!

I have just spent my first night in my new flat. Not too bad. Woke up in the night and couldn't quite remember exactly where the bathrooom is! (I have 3 bedrooms) Yesterday I got my internet installation within hours of paying for it, big surprise. Tomorrow I get cable TV set up - slight problem, the TV here doesn't seem to work at all, not even going on and off. And bigger problem, I have had no cold water in the kitchen since I arrived. I told the landlord and he sent a plumber over (again within hours - unbelievable, I think my landlord has some clout, he has a double barreled name which here in Malta means you are someone important!). However, the plumber said it was "the government's problem" and he couldn't fix it! But the lady downstairs told me this morning it is only our building affected. The plot thickens....Meanwhile, this morning the world awakes here in Malta around 8, with traffic, construction noise, and next door where they are building apartments, the radio on at full volume playing band music, Russian, religious, you name it, it is playing!!! Funny, it has died down now, perhaps it was to motivate the workers for their first hour, it certainly got me up and going!!! Good think I am an early riser!! Malta is definitely something different!!! A veritable smorgasbord of life! So, now to walk up and down the hilly streets to the supermarket and buy some food.... Hasta mañana!! BTW there are tons of expats here and others from all over the world, very interesting!!

Hi Anna,
A veritable smorgasbord of life, yes I like that, nice to see you much more happy now that you are settling in a bit, WOW Malta does seem like an interesting place,
We will all have to take a trip out there and visit you while you are still there and you can show us around and give us the 10 cent tour,
Rodney.

Easy to get here from the UK and not too costly if you take Ryanair and don't have checked in bags, and don't eat on flight and don't check in at the airport and don't go to the loo on flight (that one doesn't start yet!!!!) Wonder how much Air Malta costs!!

Today I get my TV hooked up Numerous local channels, Italian and BBC entertainment! That's the one I am looking forward to! Water works came yesterday afternoon and fixed the water problem. Don't know if it is just my being lucky (for the first time in an eternity it seems!!) or the Maltese are more efficient than in the US (despite the mañana attitude they have been thorough in coming promptly to fix things). Strolled down the street to the Strand yesterday afternoon, had my espresso and chocolate croissant in the outdoor cafe and people watched, and of course marveled at the colour of the Med. So blue. Watched the harbour cruise boats going out and the ferry - which I could get instead of the bus into Valletta. You can go anywhere on the island on the bus for €0.47. Ferry to Gozo cost €4.95 return trip, about 20 minutes each way.

But enough of Malta, this is a post for returning to the UK. Perhaps I shouldn't be writing on here - but there isn't a Malta thread, and this is a wonderful place to be en route to the UK or as a holiday to get away from the bad weather!! So I hope you all let me stay on here!

Thanks Chris, and Rodney, you are all so nice to me and have been so supportive, I hope I am giving back in some small way.
Today's news from Malta: Cable guy (plus his tattoos and piercings, but sooo nice) came on schedule Truly amazing! Hooked me up then said my TV won't support the cable box and I need something new at the back of the set. Picture fine, sound zero. I called my landlord, who came over and is soooooooo sweet and is calling 'his' TV technician to come fix the TV set. I did glimpse "the weakest link" on BBC Entertainment channel - without sound of course! Mr Attard Montalto (landlord) said he couldn't sleep last night because we didn't let him know the water problem was fixed, now I feel guilty! I must say the Maltese are super friendly, just like the guide books tell you, and, if it can be possible, are even friendlier than the Brits!!! I only hope I can find myself some work here so I can stay longer than the initial 6 months. I am going with the flow though, and today that will mean doing my washing and going up to the roof (don't worry, the buildings here all have flat roofs) to hang it out. So Maltese!!! Then perhaps another stroll down to the sea..........and tonight supposed to meet the expat group at the 'Black Pearl', a schooner now anchored in the Bay here and it is a wine bar/restaurant. Famous in a Popeye movie???? Free welcome drink

Just remember everyone, whatever you dream, you CAN make come true - it might be a struggle at times, but after the rain, the sun does shine - before it turns into rain again

So today is my final day at work .. five hours to go. I took the day off Tuesday and was "topped and tailed"!! i.e dentist, optician and hairdresser. Tonight we're off to my bosses house, down the bottom of the road so not far to crawl home after a few drinks!!, for a party they're putting on.

Household items, etc,etc were boxed up and picked up last Friday so they're on their way. We now have five suitcases between the three of us and have to go and get another one tomorrow - it's going to be painful paying the excess to BA but at least we get to take everything we want - and Im having a final day tomorrow just to get any odds and sods.

It's going to be a very strange feeling getting on that plane Sunday ... this week, I've had a few "emotional" outbursts, well not outbursts really, just me sitting in the bathroom on my own shedding a few tears. I think it's just a case of looking around me, seeing everything familiar, knowing how hard I've worked here since our arrival in 2004 - and now the house is just plain sad and empty, our two cats and two dogs have gone which is just about breaking our hearts. (I know it sounds so so hard and selfish but I'm deliberately trying not to even think about them - I just feel so very quilty - so am trying to focus on other things for now).

My daughter is so happy about coming home - yes, she's nervous about starting a new school and making new friends but I've reassured her that everything is going to be OK. She, like me, just wants to be closer to our family there.

MY OH is, in his words "getting antsy"!! He's beside himself with excitement and just can't wait to get on that plane!!

So anyway, from now until the time we get on that plane we're going to be busy - the next time I post will be when we're back on home ground - keep your fingers crossed for us!!

Lara

We are all with you and so happy for you and your family

It might be too late but if you book your extra bags on line it is much cheaper. Having said that i have been trying to do that all week for our flight in June but the page is down. If you have not done so and get this before you go it might be worth ringing them if you can't do it on line it will save you quite a bit of money, every little helps

Anyway i hope you have a wonderful flight and good luck on your new adventures

Today's news from Malta: Cable guy (plus his tattoos and piercings, but sooo nice) came on schedule Truly amazing! Hooked me up then said my TV won't support the cable box and I need something new at the back of the set. Picture fine, sound zero. I called my landlord, who came over and is soooooooo sweet and is calling 'his' TV technician to come fix the TV set. Anna that initial 6 months you talk about --- is the visa they give you only good for 6 months? is that a working visa? and if you get a Job then do you have to renew the visa after the first 6 months?
Rodney.
