We have reached that point in History when the Italians have a more sensible approach than we do.

Doctors at my surgery are quite happy to phone back, but the receptionists who are not medically trained act as triage, want to know the medical issue, and they will then decide if an appointment to see a doctor can be made. So what happened to a patient's confidentiality?

I think they just want others to take the responsibility and cost of defending them.

I ask what medical training and qualifications they have...that usually shuts them up.

I would ask them exactly that. Your medical history is your own& above all private.

It is creeping in here where we live in NZ. I asked to speak to a nurse. The receptionist was a bit frosty ( new) and told me what she thought was what. I told her that I would come down myself as my concerns were private between me , a nurse and a GP. She put me through.

Hi again John & June, I hope you are both ok and still reasonably happy in the UK, YOU KNOW ONE THING THAT i HAVE NOTICED over here in UK is that whatever operation you need, you know whatever it is ---- heart or a knee replacement, or hernia repair or whatever, what I have found in my experience in uk is you start off with the specialist that you are given, and you see that consultant on all your visits to the hospital building up to your operation, but when it comes to the actual day of surgery you never see your consultant again, instead the operation is normally done by a registra, when I had my pacemaker put in a few years ago a registra who I had never seen before performed the whole procedure, but I did notice a consultant was across the other side of the theater perched on a high stool looking at a screen which showed every move that her registra was doing, and she was talking to her registra from a microphone instructing her so I could here everything that was said, so I suppose that's fair enough, but I would have preferred my consultant that I was seeing on all my appointments did the operation, me thinks ----- do specialists over here actually do any operations any more, or do they just leave them to there trainees, I was given a local anesthetic so I could feel everything that was going on, and the registra was very rough indeed but every year I have to go into the hospital to get the pacemaker checked out, and they always say its working fine

I don't think that ever existed where many doctor's receptionists are concerned. Reminds me of my Gran, who was a cleaner at her local health centre for many years. She used to gossip with the receptionists - twas the highlight of her day! When we went round to visit (1970s this was) she would entertain us with stories of Mrs X and her stomach or Mr Y and his bad foot and as for weekly tales of 'ruddy Mrs Devonshire who was up again with her head' (not her real name BTW!) those memories make me smile to this day!
Totally wrong, looking back on it,my mum would've grown up knowing all those people and Gran didn't skimp on the details.

But with the rose-tinted specs on, looking back on Saturday afternoons that consisted of racing, wrestling, Final Score, Medical Histories Unlimited, and endless cups of coffee laced with Drambuie (by Gran, when mum left the room) - Gran, you were a legend!

My health insurance this year, despite being under Obamacare, is so screwy that I pay more to see my GP than I do to go to a walk-in clinic (where I am guaranteed to get same-day appointments). So that's what I have been doing. Other than my yearly check-up/blood work appt, I have not seen my GP at all.

My question re NHS though, if you need same day appt for acute care and can't get it at your GP, are there private walk-in clinics available? Or is your only choice the A&E?

Most areas have walk-in clinics, usually in the local A&E where you go if you need to see a GP out of their normal hours. they can refer you to the full A&E or arrange for admission in deemed necessary.

Do you ever ask if you are doing fine, or do you wait for the cardiologist to send you a copy of the letter to your GP saying that you are still alive and kicking?

My first pacemaker was inserted in 2002, and a new battery in 2010, both by the same senior Adelaide cardiologist, but I'm anxious that with the second battery now running down, the NHS will not be so efficient for a third next year.

The first one inserted with a local anaesthetic was a doddle, but the second gave some pain. I was told that this was because of the scarred tissue which had built up surrounding the device, and the anaesthetic couldn't fully function through this.

Well after my pacemaker was put in I didn't hear anything from the hospital until after a few weeks,I got a letter from them giving me an appointment for a pacemaker general check up, the appointment is always six weeks after the op and its given to everyone, and after that an appointment comes through the mail once every year for check up, my Mum has had her pacemaker since 2008 and every year when she goes to get hers checked out they say its running fine, I ask questions and I asked last time she went there, will she need to have her battery replaced soon? and they said yes in a couple of years time, they said the battery lasts around 10 years,

in Portsmouth we have several walk in clinics, my nearest one is actually inside the Saint Mary's hospital grounds, its open from 8AM TILL 8PM 7 DAYS A WEEK but no doctors are at this one, just what we call over here Nurse Practitioners, so they do know a lot of stuff, and knowledge, and like a doctor they can also write prescriptions, the clinics here deal mostly with minor injuries/burns/fractures some skin complaints, but all treatment is given on an emergency basis, and they have regular nurses there too. and every time I have been there they have always been very busy, when you get there you just fill in a very short one page questionaire, name, address, any alergies, and what your complaint or injury is, and then your told to sit down in waiting room and they call you when its your turn, and its normally an hour waiting time, no appointment needed, its strictly a walk in clinic, NO I.D. IS EVER ASKED FOR ----- as its not wherever you go for treatment, hospitals, G.P. clinics, dentist etc etc that's what I like over here, paper work is at a minimum, and eh what's an insurance card? (:

Thanks Rodney.. My daughter is actually studying to be a nurse practitioner so I am very comfortable with the level of care they can give Makes me feel much better. I pay $570 a month for insurance, and on top of that $125 for doc visit or $100 for walk in clinic. $150 for a specialist It's ridiculous.
