Tell me about it - once we've had 2 family holidays in Europe/N America, made seasonal updates to our wardrobe, upgraded the car to the RS model, bought new XBox games, and paid off the plasma TV, we've got nothing left. We're struggling to make ends meet and it sucks.

What's more important to you in life, that really is the question...is it the material things in life that you can quantify or not?
If it's just the weather, move down south, or Italy, Spain, France where a visa isn't the issue....plus until you've lost having seasons, they really are rather nice, and the weather in the UK is surprisingly not that crap and to much sun does get to you after a while.
It could just be a simple case of moving to a better location and trying to get a different career path by what ever means you can, because the same old shit in a new country will still be the same old shit, and you won't really be all that much better off....things won't be familiar so even simple little trivial things can be a major hump....family of friends get sick and you spend a fortune to go see them etc.
The issues you seem to have with the UK are pretty much common in many of the developed countries these days, they just chose not to advertise the fact...there really isn't a utopian society anymore....if you want to move to another country and get a huge house and not really work, your better off in an African country where the pound will get you a lot of land, but then again, there will be trade offs.
Moving aboard isn't easy, it isn't cheap and there is nothing wrong with people not liking it and deciding to move back, but like wise, there isn't anything wrong when people do enjoy it and it does make things better for them. At the end of the day, all you can do is read about what people say and digest their opinions and decide what really is important to you and your family, because if it isn't the same for the family, it could be a big family breaker.
It is worth giving a go, but don't burn all your bridges just in case, and if nothing else, it'll open your eyes to other cultures and way of life and you'll appreciate what the UK has to offer, because if it really was such a stinking cesspit of a shit hole, there wouldn't be as many people trying to get to the UK now would there.
Good luck with it.
