After being divorced from a scot for many years, nothing was more welcome than leaving the in laws house in Dundee, crossing the border, and knowing they will be hundreds of miles away when i get home

Britain may well have become more prosperous over the past 20 years or so taking eveything into account - in comparative terms globally there is practically nobody, absolutely nobody, in this country who can be considered "impoverished and on the breadline" - however difficult that is to believe right now with so many people losing their jobs in a (global) recession (there is always a safety net here - which some people abuse and take advantage of but there you go) - a recession which some so called economic experts believe may well be showing signs of a "green shoots recovery" on the horizon already, and in recent weeks the £ Sterling has recovered lost ground.

The Labour Party has undeniably presided over some good economic times in the UK in recent ywears but again some people maintain that is the result of the policies of the former Conservative Government to a certain degree rather than any mind blowing miracles performed by Labour.

Where Labour has really fallen down on its backside involves a moral decline rather than an economic one. Since 1997 when Labour came to power the social and moral fabric of this country has really taken a nosedive in very many quarters and this can be seen by the standards of behaviour of large sections of the population, especially in the present generation now growing up (no - I am not an old man - I am 27 years old and studied English and social history in the UK at uni). Social disorder has increased appreciably, and very many young people below the age of 25 or so have little or no respect for authority simply because of political correctness for the most part which has taught them to believe that they have rights but no responsibilities, and a criminal justice system which really does appear to show more concern for the perpetrators of crime than for its victims.

Whacking a burglar in your own home over the head with the nearest available object will invariably land you in court while the burglar receives counselling. People have been stabbed to death for defending their property and their loved ones - not isolated cases either! - the killers being young males for the most part who are so de-sensitised morally and spiritually that they are totally incapable of understanding the meaning of words like regret or remorse....all that is totally beynd their capabilities so inured have they become to what has been happening to British society in recent years - most certainly since May 1997 and "New" Labour. There is little or no fear of punishment in these criminals simply because punishment is not anything like it should be in the UK - British prisons are a doddle in far too many ways - there is more concern for the rehabiliation and future welfare of even the most hardened of the criminal lowlife than there is for truly effective punishment.

Family life in many instances has fallen apart, the UK has the highest abortion, single parenthood, divorce, juvenile crime rates in Europe and the massive rise in alcohol and drug abuse over the past five to ten years, with all the problems that all this causes, is now legendary.

Labour is fantastically good at producing a whole lot of fantastically good schemes and plans for solving this problem and that problem - all produced in very glossy documents - but that's as far as it ever goes. The latest report today shows that their handling of the chronic asylum seeker problem - a huge influx of migrants from the Third World - has been nothing less than a chaotic shambles. Out of the very many thousands of such people falling into this category only one family has been deported. Huge numbers of people who are registered for deportation from this overcrowded island nation of ours are still here after God knows how many years - and many of these mysteriously disappear into the ether - never to be seen again officially - probably still here claiming social welfare benefits by the use of stolen NI numbers, free housing, free healthcare and heaven only knows what else for which the hardworking (those of us still with jobs) are paying out of our grudgingly but dutifully paid taxes.

Most of what you are talking about is change that has occurred in most developed countries over the past 10-15 years.

Sterling was valued too highly for along time and at its worst only came down to a sensible parity (see big mac index). Exporters are getting some benefit, one of the few benefits of being outside the Euro (int rate setting).

No doubt that after leading us into a couple of big recessions, the Tories had gotten the economy running well in their last couple of years - Labour have continued to run it well over the past 10+.

Moral decline? same lament heard in all countries. I remember the same in 1993 (under the Tories) with Jamie Bulger, doubtless the same with teddy boys, Mods, Rockers, legalising homosexuality and on and on.

I think you'll find that crime stats like murder have been going down for years. Why not have a look at them.

I don't think Labour have managed asylum very well (note asylum, not immigration as a whole) - They have not committed enough resource to hear the claims quickly and the seekers who are awaiting their cases have a difficult time and are not allowed to work.

In general the UK media is a xenophobic bunch who lap up a good disaster or two and never fail to turn a normal issue into a "scandal" or "crisis". They frequently give out-of-context reports and talk down the UK at every possible turn. Unfortunately this drip-feed of negativity infects many of the populace with a loser attitude whereby they grizzle about everything, assuming MRSA (for instance) only happens in the NHS, or taxes in the UK are rampant compared with anywhere else (& stealthy - ooh, be scared, a stealth attack) or the UK economy is going to be much worse than anywhere else, and blah blah blah.

Let's face it, anyone living in the UK is living in the land of milk and honey compared to the vast majority of humans on the planet and they'd probably enjoy their lives more if the just STFU and got on with it, instead of lapping up the negativity of the Dail Mail et al.

I think drinking has become a issued for older people. Its dirty cheap. what I can buy at TESCO I could pay at least double if not more in Ontario. We tend to be very careful and drink only a half of weekly recommended amount. It can be easy to drink too much, when booze is cheap.

Petty crime has not been an issues for me, so I can not really see any different from the 80's and now. I would say I saw more petty crime in the 70's when I lived on a council estate, than the nicer area we live in today.
Quality/cost of food in supermarkets is better today.

Parents in the UK have become paranoid about letting their children play unsupervised- caused by media hyping issues. We let our boys go out and about, but we lived in out of town areas and villages.

I seen a rise in standard of living for myself and my family in the last 20 years. My wife commented at Christmas that I was from a mining/labourers family background and my family have become highly educated professionals. Engineers, Managers, Directors, Teachers etc.

So the British education system has another success story -Terrific!

I thought your post was very good but just wondered if you'd live outside of Britain at all? I'm in Australia, returning to England in 6 weeks. Your comments about moral structure lacking echo here too. Just lately in fact, I notice empty commercial properties for lease being vandalised and ruined. I'm on the Gold Coast and have never seen this before but it's happening now.

You are correct. A generation have grown up with no rules or boundaries and they are a sad sight to see. With no real guidance, parents, teachers and police unable to intervene because of do gooders rights brigade in force, they are on a self destruct course.

However, whatever is happening in the UK, is happening here too. Perhaps the only difference is that Australia being so big, people have more space so although things happen, it's not in our faces quite so much as it appears to be in the UK. This is probably because the UK, being so small and with a large population, forces people closer together so while bonds are formed and a community spirit grows, obviously the same people get a shock when bad things happen on their doorstep.

This is such a great thread I've learn so much. I'm considering the UK in the next 10 years. Hubby wants to go home....not me...he's not keen Canada. Like I said I shall be there in the fall...

Lothianlad when I left I had such high hope for labour there is no solution. 18 years of conservationism did a lot of damage, but at the same time a lot of good. I blame them for the housing shortages which cause the high rents and was the start of crazy economics, where some have so much and others have so little. Selling houses at the time for the less than you can by a new car was a joke. A friend of mine who owned a bus company brought his house for 3,000 pounds. It was nuts. The housing stock never got replaced. The cost of living on min-wage had become almost impossible. unless you wanted to live in room all your life paying almost 80% of your wage. Not everyone is capable or has the time or the money to get a university degree in order to able to get a good paying job which was not guaranty in order to get a flat. Yes it was nice theory what she did. which was to Americanize Britain, But it was so short term and such a long time lost. This I believe has created a sense of hopelessness. No matter how hard you work. It's bloody hard to get anywhere. I'm not sure if Britain can be fix. But it still a great place and that British spirit still remains. It just there is lot of angry youth....and I believe Blair should be charge for war crimes...altho I still can't being to even vote Torry. I just can't forgive them. Labour have made a mess of things sure, but now I'm not sure who is worse for the country. Both party's have done a fine job at screwing up Britain in one way or another.....

You cannot blame any government for the personal choices people make over their lives. If people choose to smoke, drink excessively, eat too much, borrow too much money and end up in debt etc, etc, that's their own choice, nothing to do with the government.

Years ago, there was a debate by two law lords over whether the government should be morally responsible for individuals. This was after a highly publicised case (don't ask me to look up the link) involving two gays, one of which, in a sexual consenting act, nailed the others testicles to a piece of wood. Again, don't ask me, I studied law briefly and this was one of the topics.

Anyway, the case was debated..........in light of the obvious discomfort of having one's testicles crucified, should the government be responsible for the moral practices of the individual?
It was noted that both adults were consenting so the case being argued came back as a firm NO. It should not be for the government to decide the morality of individuals. There would be massive public outcry.

Here we are today lamenting about the lack of morality and the heartache it causes so maybe that previous precedent was wrong. Plus of course, we now have a Domestic Bill of Rights protecting the individual in one sense but failing to protect many others because of the issue of rights.

I'm off for breakfast which is why I'm not in the mood for looking up that particular link.

Well not in Bolton, but the Trafford Centre is only 20 minutes away and you'll find dozens of fast food places (plus excellent a la carte restaurants and other cafes of all sorts) under one roof there, as well as more fast food restaurants just across the road from the Trafford Centre, in the Trafford retail park.
