Ok, so I like Berwick and Thaxted and Alnwick new-build for space (can personally do without the garden).
I was waiting for the next 2 steps. Here's what $200k will buy you in:

I should think in *central* London you will get even less actually...

Both those flats are on the outskirts

I am quoting my own post here in order to add this pre-Beeching (:curse map so we can see what used to be there. In some cases the actual rail lines still exist though are not active and in other cases branch lines have been put back into operation by local groups.

Yes I suppose it is fairly far West after all. Probably only a shoe box in Central.

I think that the railways in the UK are one of its biggest assets.
It would be interesting to find those inactive lines and to see how soon they could be put back into service.
I noticed on that map it showed a line that I didn't know existed but there was another one that wasn't shown. That one is of particular interest because my fathers cousin was killed on it.

but would we want to live in Central? Maybe yes because we could open the door and walk to so many places on foot.
I have read somewhere that being in London is like being in a foreign country for British people because in London the population is from other countries.

I think you will find that everywhere Cheers. I just received an email from an old schoolfriend in Bedford who said that Bedford is very multi-cultural now.

I love Central London. It feels like a second home to me in many ways because my Mother and I went so many times.

It seems that the West Country suffered significantly with the Beeching cuts. Some of the places at the top of my list... Marlborough, Devizes, Wells, Glastonbury... no longer have rail. On one trip back I used public transportation to get to Glastonbury and Tintagel. It was not easy! Involved multiple buses.

London is fantastic for that reason, it gives you so much variety. Its still London, still very British, even with a greater multi-cultural influence these days. I love the place, it always feels so alive

The government now see the introduction of high speed rail lines as a way of eliminating the North-South divide. Who knows? Apart from the line in the link below (which is an old article but the travel times are interesting), when buying, it is worth checking out the new high speed lines to be constructed:
