Last minute shopping

I expect someone has done this before but I didn't find it...

If you are leaving the states bound for GB on the next stage of life...wherever it takes us, anything worth buying that is not so readily available/ cost comparable over there? I'm thinking a laptop and rain wear, or maybe that should be a waterproof laptop :-)

That said, I have got a point in my life where I want less and less "stuff".

I got an iPad as a goodbye present. It was the same in dollars as it would have been in pounds.
Really practical clothes are a good thing, although anything more fashionable might end up being rejected as "too American".
I was also attempting to buy up Crate and Barrel before I left, but was cruelly stopped. I love that place!
Otherwise, I haven't missed anything.

I was tempted today with all the back to school sales on just about everything. Then remembered I'd have to pay to ship the stuff. So I am refusing to buy anything but suitcases to make the move and a new laptop (I'm sick of fighting for computer time with a child :o

Be careful with the IPad as I am told the app licenses are country specific.

The one thing my mum always wants is big rolls of tin foil and zip lock bags, don't ask me why...

I just went to the apple store yesterday and bought a new laptop. With the upgrade and apple care I'll be hurting for a while but at least apple care can be used internationally, so if something happens to my laptop I no longer have to worry about an exorbitant amount of money. Got the apple care for 3 yrs

This is true but for the most part most of the apps can be used internationally. I currently have an iPad. Was in Paris last year and brought my iPad . Used most apps except Pandora. No licensing for Pandora unfortunately

Leaving Canada, I don't think I'd buy a laptop. Apple prices are about the same on both sides of the pond.

I'll be taking my Donvier hand churn ice-cream maker. They don't have a distributor in the UK and I might pack a couple more to give as gifts. They are preferable to the electric ice-cream makers, IMO.

Wait till you need to reinstall or even sometimes upgrade. You will get charged again.
I bought mine in London several years ago, and can only upgrade in the UK. Not in France or Spain.

Not really.
I was going to get a Mac book pro 13 inch on sale for $999 right now, costs £1200 at the moment.

Yes, I stand corrected. The last time I checked the exchange rate must have been different.
