"The Goon Show" on BBC Radio 4 Extra
Revisiting my youth. Together with my brother I used to listen to the Goon Show when it was originally broadcast. We found it subversive and hilarious. Our parents did not get it, at all, and I suspect that was partly why we found it so funny.

You can still get "The Goon Show" on BBC Radio 4 Extra. The BBC have at last realised what a wealth of material they have in the archives. I am not sure if BBC Radio 4 Extra is available in foreign parts. I like the Goon Show, the old Sci-Fi serials and "Round The Horne" !

Currently working my way through the Goon Show, so far 'Wings over Dagenham' stands out. Thanks for the 'Round the Horne' memory jogger - I may soon go hunting for 'The Navy Lark'. |

Bannister:
[off] Henry! Henreeee! Crun: What is it now, Minnie? Bannister: [off] Can't you hear, Henry, there's no-one knocking at the door. Crun: Then I won't answer it, Min. You never know who it might not be. Bannister: [off] Aaaaaaah! But it might not be somebody we know. Crun: Oh, then I'd better see who isn't there. |
Re: "The Goon Show" on BBC Radio 4 Extra
Those Crun/Bannister exchanges are indeed superb; how they managed to deliver that banter without collapsing into fits of laughter more often than they actually did is also testament to the comedic brilliance of Messrs Sellers and Milligan.
I was (and still am) too young to have appreciated the original broadcasts  so I can only guess that my dim memories must have been from repeats on the Light Program.in the early '60s. My dad was a fan, mum didn't really get it. |

I think I like this stuff as a way of leaving Covid and Brexit obsessed Britain for a better place.
