Let us not romanticise the experience. "Being an expat" is the modern version of "Exilium" in Imperial Rome.

Whether you are in Dubai, recruiting honkies to work for the Emiratis or are slaving away as a sparkie in Oz, there is nothing romantic about it.

Even if you adopt the voluntary meaning for exile rather than being banished, voluntary exile was used to avoid punishment. I don't see how Expat = Exile.

No jobs at home so people go an work in a foreign land. That sounds like exile to me.Migration is economic.
