True, I recently went to the Aran islands where 1200 people live and was so surprised that they didn't have a shopping mall. It was a culture shock and I didn't expect that. They did have a Supermacs though

Re: England calling
Well, we have a few more people than that, but we have lots of these:
http://capl.washjeff.edu/14/m/411.jpg And far, far far too many of these: (perhaps the single most expensive place to buy anything - note the irony in the name) http://www.miquel.es/sites/default/f.../melilla_1.jpg And especially for yanks and Canadians who end up England, it's shockingly different from what they're used to: http://c8.alamy.com/comp/CN2FCB/birm...nds-CN2FCB.jpg And when have you ever seen anything like this in the US or Canada? (especially those funny dollar symbols on the signs. I mean, how can they figure out the prices?) ALSO: the language is so different, would a yank even understand what a 'Kitchen Towel' is? http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/...market-008.jpg Luckily, the UK government issues warnings about this: http://sd.keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk/i/k...ture-shock.png Translation for yanks: Keep Calm and Love Culture Shock But there's upsides, too: http://studyabroad.universiablogs.ne...-shock-web.jpg |

Well, that proves that Aran culture must be very different to our own on mainland Britain. It's difficult to imagine how anyone who leaves the islands ever copes.

Re: England calling
Anyone who thinks living in the U.S. is like the UK is misguided...especially if they have never lived there.

Re: England calling
Well, you certainly won't find anywhere that I've said they are the same. But you will find lots of posts making that claim.
Nonetheless, as I've said all along, compared to the 'rest of the world' there are a LOT of similarities: When Winston Churchill coined the phrase "special relationship" in 1946, he was describing two countries whose commitment to similar ideals have historically meant a keen interest in each other. But "special", sometimes, doesn't even begin to cover it. The US and UK have swapped an insane amount of political and pop culture phenomenons. There's the Reagan/Thatcher partnership. There's David Beckham's right foot (and David Beckham's left foot). Hugh Grant. Several celebrity chefs and their shared love of bacon. The Oscars. Apple products. Technology has ensured that our interest in each other stays at the forefront of our minds, and social media has made it easier than ever for us to discuss our key differences and similarities on a daily basis. Obesity Continues to Balloon in U.S. and U.K. U.S. and UK: Best business buddies? And clear differences from other places I've lived: Brits buy homes, the Germans rent – which of us has got it right? Culture Shock: Spain Versus America But pictures are worth 1000 words: British Breakfast: http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/food/ic/food...67721_16x9.jpg American Breakfast: https://maratinage.files.wordpress.c...strawberry.jpg Spanish Breakfast: http://c3.oliveoiltim.es/wp-content/...-Breakfast.jpg British dinner: http://www.foreignstudents.com/sites...ner%20comp.jpg American dinner: http://s3-media3.fl.yelpcdn.com/bpho...O2_ebtQ/ls.jpg Spanish Dinner: http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/..._travel460.jpg British street: http://www.giltbrook.co.uk/images/gbrkestweb.jpg American street: http://itcolossal.com/wp-content/upl...rbs.jpg?25bd01 Spanish Street: http://us.123rf.com/450wm/jackf/jack...albarracin.jpg |

aww yes well post a few pictures of some shops which totally clarifies the fact that it's so easy to live in the US if you're a Brit (for e.g). The whole culture experience relies on shopping. There are shops everywhere in the world...which means I could live absolutely anywhere. Well done

Re: England calling
For goodness sake...posting pic after pic does nothing to support your crazy idea that living in the U.S. is like the UK.
Out of interest...what countries have you actually lived in...let's say for more than a year? It will help us to know whether to take your claims seriously or not. |
Re: England calling
I was about to post figures pointing out that obesity is as much a problem in Spain as the UK, and post a picture of an idyllic English village contrasted with a Spanish slum, but then I thought, why feed the troll?

About 30 years ago, I spent 6 months living near Peoria working for a British firm, and achieved a pretty good sense of midwestern life. And every year, we spend time in Boston, Virginia, Chicago, Jacksonville, and ... Iowa, of all places, visiting close friends (Americans). They also visit and stay with us here in Mallorca frequently throughout the year. Yes, the US is quite different - even between US states. But nothing like the difference between say, Britain and Spain - or Germany for that matter. All of which, I have lived long-term and have many years' experience. Aside from that, I lived in Tokyo for a little over a year, Singapore, Belgium for almost 2 years, Holland for about 8 months, Hong Kong for 2 months, South Africa for a few months. My daughter is a healthcare worker in Sao Paulo and we visit about every 2 years. My son remains in England for now, but he's seriously considering a move to Costa Rica. Haven't been yet. Looking forward to it. So, Long-term living in the US, no. But it's not as though we have no exposure at all. Yet more than most, I have to suspect. |

Sigh.. that isn't a Spanish slum. In fact, it's a rather posh area of Mallorca not far from my village. But your (naturally) limited view of what is 'upscale' would never suspect that, would it? It's a bit different here. Trust me. Perhaps this also looks like a slum to you? http://www.balearic-villas.com/blog/..._spotlight.jpg It's the same neighbourhood where Michael Douglas' villa is located (and Claudia Schiffer's too). Property prices there are astronomical. Perhaps maybe the US is a little more similar to Britain than you might want to believe? |

But I'd characterise it as 'far from zero' - or in other words, significantly more than your opinion aspires to suggest. |
