Agreed, scot! I haven't checked the situation today, but I seem to recall that the UK - having ethnically cleansed all the natives - leased the islands to the US, and it is now wholly militarised as an outpost of the empire. And as we all know, when the US puts its troops anywhere, they stay there!

Well, not quite the same, scot. I was told at school that the British soldiers formed a line at the top of the Island and swept down southward, killing every aborigine that they came across. A few of the natives escaped, but essentially it was a 100% genocide. The last survivor - a chief's daughter - became quite famous at the time, when the massacres were beginning to horrify the public. At least, that was the generally accepted story. My mother named our house in Toowoomba "Trugannini" in the woman's honour.

The Chagos clearance was not as bloody. There, the soldiers rounded them all up and shipped them down to Mauritius, I think, where they didn't fare at all well, but weren't exterminated.
