I think it's pretty common - folks base themselves in London, and take a few day trips out, such as Bath or Stonehenge. There's coach companies that specialise in such trips.

(I must admit, the closest I've ever got to Stonehenge is zooming past on the A303.)

I agree with these, and all except the Cotswolds, are easily accessible by train from London, as is Cambridge, which I would add to the list.

The Cotswolds would really require a coach tour, either directly from London, or perhaps starting in Oxford for the north Cotswolds or Swindon for the south Cotswolds.
