Asian sex abusers to be stripped of UK citizenship and deported | Crime | News | The Independent

"One Whitehall legal adviser said: “There are no limits. It is not just potential terrorists who face losing their UK citizenship. Those involved in serious or organised crime, and who hold dual nationality, can expect similar justice.”"

The slippery slope begins...

So all the dual foreign-British criminals have to do is renounce their other nationality.
Or be a rich friend of a rich Tory supporter.

Voila. Can't/won't be deported.

The vast majority of the sort of criminal wont even think of renouncing, it's the ones involved, 'in the recent cases' of sex crimes, people trafficking, grooming of young people. Thankfully UK law does allow dual citizenship, otherwise we would be stuck with them.

Taking that quote literally, if I was involved in serious crime I could be stripped of my British citizenship. (I am a British citizen from birth, and naturalised as a U.S. citizen as an adult.)

Or is it assumed they mean this sanction is limited to people who acquired British citizenship through naturalisation?

I suspect the latter, otherwise if the person was solely a Brit Cit, they would become stateless.

You don't need to be convicted of any crime. You just need to earn the displeasure of Theresa May.

"The Secretary of State may by order deprive a person of a citizenship status if the Secretary of State is satisfied that deprivation is conducive to the public good."

And it's for any British national. It doesn't matter if you gained that status through birth or naturalisation.

The Home Secretary only needs to have "reasonable grounds for believing that the person is able, under the law of a country or territory outside the United Kingdom, to become a national of such a country or territory" so it's in fact very easy to make someone stateless especially since the Home Secretary can also waive any right to appeal if it is "in the interests of national security, in the interests of the relationship between the United Kingdom and another country, or otherwise in the public interest."

Sometimes, depending on who is in power, "hate preach" can be redefined.

In moments like that, people may look back on their former perceptions and weep.

As BiP says, it is a slippery slope:

If sex offenders are included, why not drug dealers? If drug dealers, why not muggers?
If muggers, why not burglers? Why not people convicted of domestic violence? Why not anybody convicted of any crime of violence? Why not anybody who commits a crime? Why not anybody whose child has been taken into care? If them, why not anybody who has claimed benefits, or even made excessive claims on the NHS?

We now have two classes of citizenship: people like myself who have it absolutely, and people like my husband who have conditional citizenship, dependent on the political mood.

That conditional citizenship, by the way, appears to apply to every jewish person who has a right to Israeli citizenship under the right of return, regardless of whether they actually have Israeli citizenship or not.

Where's the proportionality?

My punishment as a Brit should be the same as anyone else who commits a crime in the UK.

It would be an outrage if foreigners were treated more leniently in sentencing, so why should they be treated more harshly?
