I know what you mean about the whispering and you make a good point about the drown-out music compensating for a lousy script.
I'll have to check out Shetland. One advantage of being a Geordie is not having an issue with dialects; I can understand pretty much anything thrown at me

Well have really warmed to War and Peace, thanks mostly to Paul Dano. Shetland continues to be good. Birth of the British Novel, which I think is a repeat, was splendid, as was Iolo's Brecon Beacons.

I don't understand why Paul Dano's character Pierre never takes his overcoat off indoors and, despite being immensely wealthy, keeps entering rooms unannounced as if nineteenth century Russia had a servant shortage.
I was also impressed by the way the Bolkonsky family were able to change into mourning clothes instantly the moment their patriarch died, despite being refugees at the time.

Enjoying Dickensian still. Watching an Australian 'soap' drama which I like. Called "A Place to Call Home".

Have started watching Deutschland 23. Rather good. OH complaining a little about the subtitles. Never has before - but he is nearly 70 and his eyes tire more easily. Still, he is getting caught up in the plot, so will probably stick with it.

Excellent, thanks.
Looks just the thing to go with a whisky and 7up which, in turn, goes nicely with dry roasted nuts. The advantage of subtitled stuff is that while I'm crunching my nuts I'm not drowning out the dialogue.
That's where Varg Veum is handy.

Hi All,
Really enjoying Shetland. Keep looking for that next episode. I think episode 6 is tonight. Trapped is good too. Have watched 4 episodes. It took me a couple to get into it because the climate is sooo bleak.
I've loved watching the shows on Channel 4 on SAS training, Royal Marine Commando training and now the Royal Navy School which is not quite as good. This is all very strange as I would consider myself an anti military pacifist . I just find them so interesting.
Storyville always has such interesting episodes. I really like documentaries and real life shows.
There seems to be quite a few good shows at the moment. Grantchester is back (love that area... have a friend who lives right on the border of Grantchester and walked by the river with her in 2014 so it brings back good memories), the show is a bit boring though.
2 new series tonight: Thicker Than Water on channel 4. Nordic noir and seems promising. Murder on BBC1. A bit different. We'll see. It has a scandi director.
Got some good tips from reading your posts.

... also meant to say about Happy Valley that I have to watch it but it makes me very tense. I am always expecting something to happen to the little boy. I find myself watching with one eye while doing something else.

Started watching Spin last night. Excellent! Thanks, as usual Fulwood. I am starting back at the beginning of Series 1 so will have lots of episodes to watch. Didn't realize by French had become so bad.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs
I'm loving the French slang I'm picking up. In the last episode I learned that 'ostrogoth' is a derogatory term. It was translated in the sub-titles as 'philistine' but the context suggested something slightly different. I also liked 'grandpère gâteaux' for an indulgent grandfather and the frequent use of 'bordel'.
