Default Arrived back in UK a week ago, everything seems crappy

I arrived back a week ago and have been staying with family. It has been great seeing the family again but as I see more of the UK, everything just seems....crappy.

I guess its me thats changed because my home town of leicester hasnt changed much and yet it just looks a lot worse to my eyes.

Its hard to explain, the streets and houses are obviously small and more cramped looking and its been strange getting a car on the road and driving around here again. The more places I go the more crappy it seems

Its just after having seen so much incredible stuff in australia I am struggling to adjust again.
Going in country pubs that are tiny and like someones living room for a drink, when I think I could be in a massive casino instead.

I am wondering why I came back, and trying to fight the urge to jump on a plain back to aus.

Has anyone had a similiar feeling?

Yes, been there, in spades.

However, even from my jaundiced viewpoint it seems clear you shouldn't make any rash decisions like jumping on a return flight.

Try to think of it like a holiday, at least for the moment. Maybe you will go back, but until then give the place the benefit of the doubt - believe me, your attitude could well change drastically just over a period of weeks or months. If not, then maybe think of a change in plan at that point. At the moment you are letting your (natural) feelings of culture shock make you think of drastic action, and this won't help you to adjust at all.

Why did you return to the UK? Maybe remembering those reasons might help you put things into perspective.

Actually, Leicester has changed dramatically over the last five years or so, with a lot of investment in the town center. I'm surprised you can't see the difference. I visit quite regularly, as my g/f's family live there.

Hi dave, a Leicester girl here, I was home last year for 8 weeks and loved it and going back soon for another trip. Tough time of the year to go back because of the weather.
Want to chat about it? send me a Private message, maybe I can help.
Few questions, did you travel back from Aus alone, how long were you away. How old are you?
Def. give it longer a week in no time, DO NOT get on the plane yet.

Give it a couple of months and see the spring in - it changes from crap to idyll in very little time. Mind you, you did say Leicester LOL what do you expect? You'd prefer a casino over a pub???? wow, no accounting for taste!

Dont do anything rash!

Me too.

Moving back to the UK is a huge decision, had you never been back for a holiday first?

I recently spent a year there and LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

As people on here have said the weather wouldn't help, but spring is around the corner, so get in your car and travel to some of the most beautiful places in the world right on your doorstop.

Oh and give me a country pub with its little nooks and crannies and a fireplace and cheerful locals having a pint (with maybe one fruit machine in the corner) over a soul-less, noisy, loud, casino full of people shovelling money into endless row upon row of pokies, some don't even look up never mind engage in conversation. I have been to Sydney Casino maybe 6 times and Jupiters once and I find them BORING as hell LOL!!

I wonder how old you are Dave?

This is probably the hardest time to move back from Australia to the UK. Everything seems grey, the cold goes through you like anything and most people have a permanent frown as the post-christmas jeez-it's-a-long-time-to-Easter, isn't-it? reality dawns. And you know back in Oz, the temperatures up in the 40's and everyones in shorts and thongs. That's why we came back in May. But even with 8 months preparation its still tough at times. I'd stay in that pub for a couple of months if I were you - and think how much more it would be costing you at The Garden in Leederville

I just spent 3 weeks in the UK and it made me realise why I want to go back. Give me a little village pub over a big crass casino any day of the week. I'm not sure what Leicester is like but get out into the country. I agree with others, why did you leave Australia ? You seem to like what Australia offers.

LOL T'was a joke! Nothing wrong with it as far as I know - I'm from a bit further south and should have put the LOL in, everyone knows that anywhere north of the A14 is beyond the pale LOL

agree, small cozy pub over some generic casino any day! I find them depressing to be honest but I've only been to the ones in Macau...maybe they have different atmospheres in different places, who knows!

Pubs are one of the biggest things I miss about the UK! That and the big super markets.....hmmmm Sainsburys how I miss you !

I agree, returning in winter would make things seem a little grim anywhere in England... And it sounds like you are going through a little culture shock right now. It also depends on what you like/want. When I was in my 20s I wanted noise and excitement, but now I'm a little older, good old Sussex seems inviting to me! However I think trying it out for a couple of months will help me really get the feel of it -- come out of the fantasy in my mind. Don't worry, just enjoy! You can always return to Oz later -- it'll still be there, casinos and all.
