Im moving back to the UK next week and can't wait. Personally I find it quite dull here in the Lower Mainland and I don't believe there are too many prospects (academically or professionally). Im glad for the experience though!

I lived in coquitlam for about 6 months (not sure why) and did n't care for the place. It was like living in the middle of a shopping mall.

However, I do like living in vancouver proper where the neighbours are very unique and very livable, close to the beach and many independent stores as well as the convenience of stock stores. I can find absolutely everything I need within a short walk, be ti cafes, bars restaurants, banks, supermarkets, cinemas etc. It is this lifestyle that I'm drawn to, however, as brizzle rightly points out it may not be doable for all given cost etc

I live in Coquitlam  I think that I get a different experience to those that are able to live more centrally. Thing that pee's me off is that I could really afford to buy in UK/Van after 2002, but didn't get to visit the UK enough to be able to buy a place and didn't know I'd end up marrying someone from here and then return later. If hindsight prevailed I'd have bought something in Van, but it was too expensive before I knew it. Van can be great place if everything falls into place right, but it it don't necessarily always happens that way.

Me too. I think it depends on what field you are in, but it ain't easy for sure. Vancouver is way, way, way overrated and honestly, it's getting so much more crowded and expensive, that'll it end up putting people off. The original appeal of the place and the subsequent movement of 100's of thousands of people here will kill the golden goose. Really most days, I could be living in Hong Kong or similar for the amount of English being spoken. At least there, I probably be earning a decent salary.

Ah now i know why you are such a miserable bugger;). When I speak of Vancouver i tend to omit the metro areas and think only of Vancouver proper. The reasons I enjoy living here don't really apply out of the city. I have zero desire to live out of the city with the exception of one or two places. The experince of living in metro vancouver's burbs is completely different to the lifestyle of living in the city. I find life, for the most part, deathly dull out in the burbs.

I too met a Canadian and ended up here by chance. We actually met in San Diego when I worked for the cruise lines. I knew very little about Canada and even less if anything about BC/Vancouver. Funny how life conspires against you. The prospects of a crap job, low pay and a house in Coquitlam would not be overly appealing to me and would defeat the reasons that I enjoy living here. I would rather rent downtown than own out in the burbs. Easy for me to say since I only have me to worry about.

Three days at the Great Wolf Lodge just outside Olympia cost us $1200, all in. Add petrol and beer....around $1400. I thought I could manage a holiday for the younger kids this year - then eldest daughter called this morning to say she is coming back to Canada from the UK, as she cannot get a decent job to pay rent on her own. She has given up trying to make ends meet. Add her flight costs...aggggggggggggggggggh!:scaredhair:

My brother is the manager for the Asda/Walmart in Manchester. He told met that booze is sold largely at a loss to attract shoppers. Creates the notion of unfair competition for those that depend on liqour sales, particularly pubs.

I seldom drink these days and never could understand the preoccupation with cheap booze, still my old man always asks for a bottle of grouse from duty frees when I head back to blighty.

Around about that time the initial honeymoon is over, the adrenaline rush of finally getting here long gone, but for most people if you stick at it, then in time, like another 6 months, things will start to fall in place and feel familiar, and then you can make a rational decision about how you feel.

Making any decision in the first year or two is really asking for trouble in the long term.

As Iain has mentioned on numerous posts to many people - don't make any decisions based on your feelings during the first year. Emotions run high (and incredibly low). We're here three years in a few weeks and I constantly thought about returning during the first year. In fact I think I wrote a long-winded post on that very subject during the first few months.

Here's my thoughts at the six month mark: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=426964 My, how things have changed. :o

Take your time and although I fully appreciate that you won't be able to see any positives just now they will come eventually.

Good luck.

I'm working in a job, I was doing 10-15yrs ago. Outside of downtown, there are possibly one or two areas that have any life or soul.

If I were you I'd give it a year or two, it may grow on you. For me, I love my football/cricket, pubs, history, quality tv, culture and travel to Europe. Been away too long and would rather be in the UK than here :(

I think the lack of decent, interesting jobs just about sums it up. I came to Ontario in 1987. Those were the days when Ontario was supporting the whole country and good, high paying jobs were in abundance. And then Bob Rae came to power in the provincial government..... The amount of companies that left during that era, or never came here, has now left us as a have-not province. You can probably do okay here if you have a government job.

Wierd isn't it?? It's OK I suppose, better than Surrey that's for sure. Each of the main suburbs has nice areas, but I really don't think much of any of them (Richmond, Burnaby etc). It's a bit further away here. Trouble is that it's expensive downtown and not much affordable housing for a family. Love to go back to the UK, but obviously at this moment in time it's job dependent. Applied for a job there recently, so here's hoping !!

As Kiwilass will attest, there are actually some very neat older established areas in north Burnaby (capitol hill and vancouver heights). Hope all works out for you. Good luck :fingerscrossed:

Aye, cheers. Like I said each suburb does have it's plus points. Burnaby, I think is pretty awful in most respects. Some of N.burnaby is pretty nice, but much of it is very non-descript and downright dodgy in some areas.

It actually can be pretty beautiful out here. I had a really nice day today and really took in the views and appreciated that it is pretty. But really, it's a bit like saying I love central London and want to move there , but end up living in Bromley or Barnet. Nowt wrong with those areas, but it ain't the reason you'd move there.

I agree..though it's fast changing. TBH, though, I find the same for a lot of Van - esp. South east or south Van, just as nondescript as a burb.

I live in Cap Hill/Van Heights. It's great there. There's pretty much everything I could want walking distance from my house, plus nice views of the north shore...and not too far from DT.

YEs, Coquitlam is pretty.

Why don't you rent where you want to live and rent out your current place? Might help if you're stuck here for the forseeable.

North American suburbs are a thing on their own. (Though Australia might have the same sort. I don't know.)

They truly are some people's heaven. They love life there and would hate to live closer in to a city right up against other houses, with traffic outside the door and a small garden.

We lasted about a year in a lovely suburb then ran away screaming to a down-town fringe neighbourhood that felt alive.

So it depends what you like, but if you're in a suburb and going nuts, can you try somewhere else?

Mind you, we're still going back to the UK. Stuff ships this weekend.

We have been in Canada for four months and although its a great lifestyle for the kids and where we are is low in crime and a great place to raise kids, we are finding it tough. In all honesty its all a bit dull. The canadians i have met and socialise are very nice people, but i'm craving some good old British banter, and am starting to feel more homesick as times go on.
If i could transfer all the area has to offer for amenities and activities and deposit it in the beautiful yorkshire Dales (where we came from) it would be fab!!;)

Just interested if there are any other expats in Canada feel the same way?

Yes. I came to North Vancouver with my boyfriend 3 years ago and we now have a little Canadian of our own. I started to miss home about 6 months in and have been up and down ever since. We're going to apply for citizenship next month which takes up to 15 months to go through and I'm giving myself that time to decide whether to return or not because I want to be sure that returning is the right thing for us (my boyfriend would prefer to stay here). It's a hard decision but if I still feel the same way after 4 years I can't see it changing. I'm watching that ITV series 'No Place Like Home' with interest.

Best part of Van is N Van. I lived on W19th near the blockbuster for nearly 7 years. If you do come back could you bring Lonsdales sushi restaurants and roastmaster please. Tks ;)

BTW defo get your citizenship. As i was saying above i do miss it from time to time and we intend to return at some stage. Its also peace of mind knowing you can go back if you feel like it. It might be the thing that makes you happier in the UK if you do return.

MY OH and i have been toying with a move to North Van - motivated by better affordability - compared to Kits that is - although I do love living in Kits. I would actually be easier for work since I work in Burnaby, but my oh works downtown.

So true about teh sushi. I spent 6 weeks in the UK in 2007 and craved sushi - what they were trying to pass off as sushi in manchester put me right off.

From what I've read on the CIC website you don't have to be in Canada to apply. Once you've met the residency requirements you can move back to the UK and apply from there.

If I'm wrong, someone please let me know

Thanks, that's good to know. We don't meet the requirements until next month so I've not really looked into getting citizenship in great detail yet but I'll check that out.

You will have to take the citizenship test in Canada and also attend the citizenship ceremony in person. So two trips to Canada, possibly on short notice. If you are living outside of Canada you may also be interviewed by a citizenship judge to determine suitability and intentions.

Awe, are you just homesick?

and after what 4-5 months & I'll bet for all the wrong reasons you couldn't wait to get away from Blighty at the first chance

I say give it a go & stick it out at least 2-years (no hols back in between either) & then see how you feel

you never know what or how good you had it till you leave it behind (possibly)

same goes for any immigrant or those that return back to the UK

I say give it a go & stick it out at least 2-years (no hols back in between either) & then see how you feel

We didn't leave the uk for all the typical wrong reasons, a business oppurtunity came up for my husband that we would have been crazy not to take up- so far this is turning out well. We also all have (except hubby) citizenship making it easier to go We will be giving it a couple years as the business has build up and establish itself.
I appreciate that people advise not to go back for a couple years - we have a lot of family in the uk that we will be visiting in the next 6 months, two years is too long for us and our kids not to see them.

There were things that we didn't like about the uk but the same goes here, i happened to love the area we came from. I am viewing this as if it works out and we are all happy as a family then we will stay, if not as a family we would be happy back where we were.

I agree, if we do go back there are some things I would miss. Do you mind me asking why you returned to the UK and if you've ever regretted it?

I PM'ed you.

That is 100% the truth. I see the original poster has reached 4 months and is increasingly homesick.... Do people not look into culture shock and homesickness as part of the emmigrating process? It should really be a compulsory part of the curriculum.

I've been miserable in Canada for almost 3 years now the only thing keeping me here is my wife...Unfortunately even that is wearing a little thin right now.

I think it often depends on what stage in your life you are at. Times magazine recently did a really interesting article stating that there is a World-wide migration trend of people returning their home country. This is based on the fact that as people age, many feel the need to return to their roots.

Is there no way you can go back to uk? It must be very hard when one of you likes it and one of you doesn't. We always said to eachother if one wasn't happy then we would go back, as we know we could settle back into life in the uk, but it must drain you and as a couple if one person is miserable.
i hope you can find some compromise, life is short and being being miserable for 3 years in a place must be all consuming.

Hope you can work something out:)
