Not thus far but it is early days. However, I dont expect any mind shatteringly significant regrets. For me it has been the little things - my hair suddenly deciding to go all kinky and curly and having the misfortune to get a hairdresser who seemed (whatever she said) to have the one Pob style in mind (now back to a more manageable Judi Dench thank heavens).
I also miss the wide car parking spaces and a shower with power but apart from that, nothing to write home about. We are in an odd position though - older, not needing to work and living with my parents (they need the support) so I guess a lot of issues which beset most returnees havent applied in our case. How is the Aussie hubby taking to life in the UK? |

Quoll did not know you had moved back permanently, how did I miss that?

Semi permanent but I have hopes! He is handling it really well - has a compost heap and a crow bar already and has joined the gym so I have hopes of converting him (he is already looking forward to a day in London just perusing the second hand bookshops next week!). Big surprise to us all really!

Re: Any regrets on moving back to the UK?
Thanks for posting these comments as it's giving me a different view of things as we're are thinking of leaving NZ and returning home to the UK... We haven't said anything to Family and a small selection of friends as we valued their opinion on how the country is and job prospects... Over here I'm a stay at home mum and have a 10 and 12 yr old, we have been here nearly 8 years and feel we have given what we came out her for to our kids and feel that they need to experience the UK and have the choices we had at our teenager years... We have given them the safety of living in NZ and the out doors experience but feel the will be lacking the variety of what the UK has to offer... Yes we would miss the weather and the open space and size of housing but to be honest like a lot have suggested things change and things become more important and we feel the education over here and way of life for a teenager is not what we would like our children to have... They don't have much to do over here and cost of travelling is expensive not much opportunities and they have years yet before they need a job and hopefully things might be better for everyone in about 6+ years time.... It's nice to see that people have made the move and haven't taken the doom and gloom that newcomers to living aboard have left for, everyone has different circumstances and where I wouldn't discourage anyone from making the plunge to come here we're thinking of our kids and what we feel they need and don't think they can get that over here... So thanks again for your views as it gives us a non biased opinion and no one knows us and has anything to gain... We would move back without having to get a mortgage we just need hubby to get a job in his field and from the agencies we have checked online there seems to be plenty of jobs in his field... Just not sure where we'd be living and most of my friends no disrespects to them have never lived abroad and want to leave as they feel they could have a better life in another country... Maybe but things change in all countries and it's not just the UK that's struggling it's most places... nowhere is perfect it's what you do and how you make your life the life it is....

Generally speaking, if you talk to someone who has recently moved to Aus (or the US, or country x, y, or z), they are going to tell you the UK is going to the dogs.
If you talk to someone who has decided to return to the UK, they'll tell you the UK is paradise on earth (and Aus, the US, or country x, y, or z are going to the dogs). There are exceptions of course, but you have to take a lot of conversations (in real time, or with folks on BE) with a pinch of salt, and consider where they are coming from/going to. |
Re: Any regrets on moving back to the UK?
Babykayleigh, you imply that you could put down roots anywhere in the UK. If so, I'd look for a place as similar as possible to your situation in NZ for the sake of your kids. For example, if you're living in a fairly rural place with lots of nature it would be hard, I think, to move them into a city. If you're in a small town near the sea, they'd probably settle into something similar.
In one of our Canada moves we could have settled in a lovely small place near my husband's work, but we were moving our teenagers from a city where they could bus and bike to loads of activities and it didn't seem fair. I'm not sure we would have wanted the small place either, but we'd probably have given it a go if we only needed to think of ourselves. Bev |
Re: Any regrets on moving back to the UK?
The only regret I have is that my grown up kids and grand-kids live in Australia. I came back on my own about 9 months ago and honestly rarely miss much about Australia at all except them of course.
Like Quoll says the power showers there are hard to beat but I don't have too bad a one where I live at the moment but am moving in a few weeks. Some little niggly things like the way this or that is done, for instance here they use snail mail a lot more. I haven't seen any Tim Tams in the shops yet, but most supermarket sell Vegemite and Aussie wines. I am really liking the seasons, I have been through spring, summer and now autumn, don't know how I will cope with the winter. BTW I lived in Australia for almost 30 years and over on the Over 50's and 60's thread is a lady who has recently moved back from Adelaide on her own and within a few weeks she has bought a flat in Eastbourne and she is in her 70's and lived in Oz for over 40 years!!! Home is where the heart is. |

Plus I've found that people are just slower over there - slower to respond, slower to do what they promised etc. It all gets done, but not at the speed it would here. Perhaps that's because people still go home at 5pm and take decent holidays rather than working like slaves. |

I remember when I took out car insurance I couldn't drive until my policy had come in the post, unheard of in Australia. I found out on November 15th that I have the job I applied for, I handed in my notice on my job and flat on November 18th and I still haven't my official job offer letter in the post. Yes things do seem to move more slowly here, but maybe that's a good thing, dunno but it does take some getting used to. edited to add I am leaving my American company so I can leave work on time and not be a wage slave. :sunglasses: |
Re: Any regrets on moving back to the UK?
As has been said already most new immigrants from the UK will tell you the country has gone to the dogs and has nothing to offer blah blah blah as they need to justify their move. The first trick is to discount about 75% of what the British media tell us about the way the country is and listen to people who are living there. None of our friends over there think we are mad and they cant wait until we get back.

For instance if you are living overseas and your family say what do you want to come back to this hell hole for, it has gone to the dogs, hoodies, crime, unemployment, migrants taking all our jobs, poverty, rising prices, blah blah blah, then it would be very hard to come back here. However Chris, my family never said any of this, they just said what time does your plane land? |

I think your family and friend's attitude can have a lot to do with the way you perceive GB.
