IanBlakeley,
''Once you have a tax number you get a request to file''
Did you a receive request from the MY tax authority to file or do you mean one is requested to file a tax return?
Sorry for elaborating, but I have had a tax number for some ten years now but I have never received any request.

They have my email address. I tend to delete mails once I've actioned them so I cannot be sure if I got an email to that effect or the officer told me when I registered. They do give you a number to register online and an e-filing number using that and whichever ID they have for me a foreigner that is my passport. Now I know I need to be filing I check the website until it is open in the new year, as I recall you can file from January onwards but the online filing is normally not available for a month or so, I can see for example I submitted 2019 return at the beginning of March this year.

@Gunnar45 and @IanBlakely I'm following your conversation with interest. I do have a Malaysian tax number and they do know my contact details. I have not received a request or a reminder that I need to file a tax return.

One benefit of having a tax number here is that one has something to provide to ones homeland authorities to prove tax residency status.

I found this guide (don't know if it is definitive):
http://www.imoney.my/articles/income...filing-guide-2
It says that a tax return is only required if annual income exceeds RM 34,000 (i.e. consistent with links provided by others). I assume this is Malaysian taxable income, i.e. excluding overseas income if under MM2H, please correct me if wrong.

For UK tax authorities / pension providers I have a certificate of residence for 2020 quoting a Malaysian tax number, and assume I can obtain one annually (provided I qualify). Does filing a Malaysian nil tax return provide additional evidence, or is it redundant?

HMRC gave me a form which I had to ask the local tax people to sign. They were fine doing so which suggests it is a known procedure. I have had the banks here ask if I am registered locally, my understanding was if not then they would advise home country of any accounts.
