In Sarawak I required neither. Only proof that I could provide for myself at a fixed income/pension of RM7000 (I'm Single- RM10,000 for couples). No Fixed Deposit or LOGC required. I also did not have to establish liquid assets.

This is current (February 2018) policy.

Yes, I was surprised as I had come armed with a sheaf of bank deposit print-outs, some things about my real-estate holdings, etc. I didn't need them. I was all prepared to get the "Good Conduct" document (at some expense) back in California, but was told by the Sarawak Tourism Ministry "not needed" just before I applied (required a full set of fingerprints back in the States...I'm surprised they haven't started asking for DNA).

So given the apparent tightening of standards of the MM2H that side of the channel, it appears that Sarawak is actually (in some ways) loosening theirs. Hope they get the "local sponsor" thing sorted out. It's the biggest impediment to making their program really a success.

I'm also an advocate that the Fixed Deposit be opened up to allow withdrawals for just about any domestically related purchase...it's all good for the local economy. But at a minimum: local tourism, crafts, locally manufactured furniture, clothing, memberships, charity, events, restaurants, much higher levels for property/condo purchase, etc. It does nobody (except the bank) any good if the cash is "parked" in an account and most of it will depart (with interest) at the end of the visa term. Spend, spend, spend.
