Cancelling MM2H
#1

Hi, Does anyone have info on how to go about cancelling MM2H and getting back the fixed deposit. Can this be done from outside the country? Also, we have bank accounts in Malaysia, will these need to be dissolved beforehand or can we leave it for a while?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Fenella. Sorry to hear you have to go. But as regards banking, I opened a bank account in Malaysia while I was here on holiday, long before going there permanently. The bank was pretty relaxed about it actually. I think you could keep your bank account open if you want to.
If you are with HSBC and have a HSBC account overseas, maybe in your home country, I think it would help a lot to smooth that process.

Thanks Flyguy! How long ago was it that you were able to open the account? When we're next able to get back to Malaysia, we'll visit the banks and see what they say. No HSBC account I'm afraid.

Just keep the accounts, don´t ask any questions and everything should be OK.

Here's the procedure to cancel MM2H from abroad.
https://www.imi.gov.my/portal2017/in...s/mm2h-bi.html
The problem is that there is something about getting the cancellation letter for the FD fro MOTAC-MM2H. MOTAC is no longer handling this so presumably it would have to be issued by the Miistry of Immigration.
They seem to be in utter chaos. The roll out of them taking over many of the activities of the MM2H desk hasn't gone smoothly. They are still not accepting noew applications, although it appears they are handling creme]]newals and at least part of the cancellation process.
Once you get the letter it's up to you to arrange the withdrawal from the bank. Hopefully you have a name of the bank official/manager that handled your account and they can accept on-line submissions or transfers.

This is not true. After I heard this a couple of years before I asked Nancy Shukri personally at an event and she confirmed that there has never been a directive like this and MM2Hers can hold als many bank account as they want. Another fake news is that we are not allowed to send our kids to public schools and have to choose the (ridiculous expensive) international schools in Malaysia.

This is correct. It is advisable to have a bank account in a foreign country. You never know if you may need it in the future...
This is what we received regarding cancellation in Sabah:
1) Write a letter of intent for general director of immigration sabah for each of MM2H holders
and
2) email scans of:
-signed letter of intent to terminate
-copy of the original approval letter from mm2h
-copy of passports and visa
-letter of confirmation of your FD from the deposit bank
-details of booked flight
3) motac will provide a letter for the Immigration; take letter to immigration a month before your flight;
4) With an approval letter from the immigration, a bank will release your FD.
I don't know if this can be done outside Malaysia, but I've read it can be done.
