Relocation suggestions please.
Hello and thank you for reading my post.
British male, early 70s, retired mechanical engineer, seeks suggestions based on first hand experience for possible relocation. First priority, No form of central heating required at any time of year. Air conditioning acceptable provided not needed 24/7. Will not be seeking any form of employment in new location. Local language not a priority in early stages, as long as English is spoken on day to day basis. Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa already discounted. Any suggestions based on first hand experience will be appreciated. Again, thank you for reading the post. Register44 |
Re: Relocation suggestions please.
There are some countries in Central and South America that have visas that ar suitable for retirees and have significant numbers us retired US citizens living there - notably Panama and Ecuador, and maybe Costa Rica.

It's a big wild world out here, beyond the places you crossed off! Tell us a bit more about your specific likes and dislikes.

Re: Relocation suggestions please.
Have you explored any of the British Isles in the Caribbean. Heat is definitely not needed and a/c would be optional depending on the location of your housing. Nearer the beach the better the ocean breezes to cool you and the house down as well as some of the mountain areas of the isle. Personally, I'm not a fan of any of the South American countries. That, however, is my personal choice. What about the islands in the Pacific. Many retirees living on those isles who appear to be happy and content.

Re: Relocation suggestions please.
Fifteen years or so ago, my wife - aged late 60s - set out to find a place we could happily live out the rest of our lives. She went to "gringo colonies" in Central America, and settled on Ajijic on Lake Chapala in Mexico. We pencilled it in, but then the need for personal medical care came into the picture, and we put the decision on the back burner. In the end, we stayed in the Cayman Islands (a British colony in the Caribbean, where we had lived for decades), and she died there. Last year my son and daughter-in-law invited me to join them in Ecuador, and I'm very tempted to stay here. My advice to this thread's starter is to do what my wife did and wander around checking out places currently peopled with a reasonable number of English-speaking foreign retirees. Don't be foolish enough to settle on - or settle in - a place without visiting several others.

Re: Relocation suggestions please.
Panama - all of your requirements and no tax on income originating from outside the country.

Yes, there are plenty of places that don't tax income - including some closer to Britain, and English-speaking. But he seemed to be hung up on the Mediterranean.
What countries closer to Britain don't tax income/investments? I can only think of the Caribbean and Middle East which are barely closer. I am looking for an offshore account for myself as I am moving and looking for suggestions. Cayman Islands? |

Re: Relocation suggestions please.
Jersey and Guernsey tax residents up to 20% which is reasonable but require a high net worth for residency. The Caribbean may be the best bet for the OP. There is a wide variety of islands from those requiring a high net worth to those with less restrictions. They certainly meet his criteria for climate and language requirements.
https://imin-caribbean.com/blog/easi...n-citizenship/ There is also the Dutch ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) with no hurricanes. If we were still in the EU, he could move there quite easily. |
Re: Relocation suggestions please.
Or Sosua on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, shielded from the hurricanes by the mountains. Plenty of Europeans living there and some upmarket gated communities:

My thanks to all for the replies, especially to Gordon and Johnboy for the information provided.
Can anyone provide, from first hand experience, suggestions in the Pacific region please? I have spent time in PNG and found the weather ideal. Thanks again, Register44 |
