Work Relocation To Limerick

Hi there, I'm a noob and found this website via google, so I may be repeating this post, in advance, I apologise.

A role in Limerick has been advertised internally with my company. I have spoken to my family and we are all very interested in a move to Ireland, we currently live in West Yorkshire and are becoming increasingly fed up with the way things are going in the UK.

I have a meeting with my manager on Thursday to discuss the logistics, but, as this is quite a sudden move I'd like to ask, basically, what we need to do next if I get the green light.

My wife works for the NHS and my daughter is 18 and is currently at college. We also have a dog.

We have a house to sell and have not visited the Limerick area yet. I've done some research on the daft.ie website regarding property, as renting for the short term seems the way forward.

I also have a company car, would it be so easy as to just take this car and use it in Ireland.

Any advise or suggestions or help or really just about anything will be so gratefully received. Even though this is a very exciting opportunity to actually carry on doing the job I am currently doing, with the same company in a beautiful country, at 40 years of age its still quite a scary proposition.

Thanks
Jason

I think it might be best for you to come over here and check out Limerick first. The nickname for Limerick is "stab city". Though the drug gangs usually use guns now. Their are some truly dreadful housing estates in Limerick where crime rates are high.

Your wife works in the NHS in UK - she might find it hard to get a job in the HSE over here as things are bad and they're cutting back.

You your wife and daughter will not be eligible for any social welfare payments owing to the habitual residency rules.

You can drive the UK company car for 12 months if you inform them of your temporary move from UK, but check with your insurance company as most will only let you drive for a short period. . If you move permanently you'll have to get an Irish reg car.

The only upside of the recession / depression which is happening here is low property prices. You might want to look at the town of Ennis which is a far nicer place and just down the road.

Don't want to paint too bad a picture but you don't want to jump out of the proverbial frying pan into the fire.

All the best.

Hi

I have just accepted a job at the University of Limerick and have been over to visit a few times - what a stunning University it is. I don't know the area very well yet and yes there are some dodgy areas in the city but also some very nice areas and the surrounding area is fantastic. The Irish people are amazing so check it all out and if it feels right go for it......we are moving in January so lots to check out and organise

Hi
Limerick has some rough areas its true, probably no worse than cities in the UK. LIMERICK IS NOT a big city and it is very easy to commute from several towns surrounding limerick in both Clare and Limerick, even parts of Kerry and Cork are commutable. This part of the country has some of the most stunning coastline and countryside. Hse not hiring at moment so it may prove difficult for your wife but nursing homes may be an option or maybe she would be prepared to kick back for a while until things pick up (could be 2-3 years though).

University of Limerick is an excellent UNI. You can drive your car for a year before you must register it in Ireland, though a Swedish friend of mine drove his swedish reg car for 6 years here before returning to sweden. Do bring your car with you, there more expensive here, however you must own it for 6 months before coming I think.

Best of luck

PS The economy is a mess here at the moment, but it will eventually sort itself out unless the euro collapses and if that happens wherever u are you'll be in trouble.

Hi - could not agree more - I currently live in Edinburgh - undoubtedly a beautiful city but there are parts of Edinburgh few would venture into and are kept well hidden!

I am a nurse by background and there are recruitment issues in both the UK and RoI -likewise the NHS is not recruiting however there may be other options as Brucy identifies and also it depends on her areas of expertise - if there is a shortage then she may be lucky. She could always come to UL to do some study or research which is where I am going to work!

Heading over to limerick tomorrow to try and find somewhere to rent - there is plenty and compared with Edinburgh availability and costs are favorable. Interested in the car issue as I am not sure what to do but bringing my own over seems like the best option.

The recession/euro is of course a concern but the UK is not exactly racing ahead and is so linked in to what happens in the euro we might as well be in it.

Good luck in making your decisions - took me a while but think it is the right one and looking forward to new challenges and meeting new people.

Thanks guys for some very balanced (and amusing) replies. I've got a meeting with my boss to discuss the job, so I'll keep you informed of the outcome.

Hi jaysbee1971,
you will find Rent.ie and Daft.ie the best places to find somewhere to rent (better than the local newspapers).
With regard to your car, if you have owned it for more than 6 months you can import it without paying any VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) import duty.
It needs to be registered in your name (not your company's) for more than 6 months though.
If you don't want to do this you can drive it on UK number plates for up to 6 months, but then yo either have to return it to the UK of import it and pay the VRT.
The problem is that most UK insurers will only insure you to drive your UK registered car for up to 90 days in the Republic.
In my experience it is easier and cheaper to buy a car in the Republic and pay for Irish car insurance.
When I moved to Ireland 2 years ago; I imported my car. I paid the VRT, road tax, Irish car Insurance, Irish number plates, and got it NCT (MOT) tested. After doing all that the car was the same price as if I had bought it in the Republic so I saved nothing by doing this.
You will find there are some good and bad parts of Limerick. Don't believe the media hype, it is no more or less dangerous than living in any big town in England. If you want to get to know the good and bad parts of Limericj read through Boards.ie You will get good local information that way, which is more honest and frank than what you read in the newspapers. I hope this helps.
Regards,
Sean MacMaghnuis

Re: Work Relocation To Limerick

Hi

just retuned from a very good weekend in Limerick - stayed at the Absolute hotel and Spa which was great and a good position close to town but quiet. We looked at a number of properties but have decided to go to an extremely pretty lakeside village called Killaloe which will be a 20 minute commute to UL for me.

As we are keeping house in Edinburgh for frequent trips back also decided to leave car and buy something second hand over there - buyers market so hoping to get a good deal as bringing car over may not actually save any money at the end of the day.........

Re: Work Relocation To Limerick

Not sure if this is still an active thread but I've been living in Limerick since last September and for period before then so thought I might chip in.

I heard about the whole Stab City thing before I came here but it's not as bad as they say. People here reckon the media make more of it if there's an incident in Limerick because of the reputation but whether that's true or not I reckon Limerick is no more dangerous than most UK cities. So long as you don't venture into some of the bad estates (which I doubt anyone browsing this forum would do) you'll be fine.

Wish you all the best with the move.
