European bank --> European bank transfers are far less expensive than the UK bank --> European bank equivalent.
And as your transaction will be in Euros all the way, you won't have the potential for currency exchange ripoffs which British banks are legendary for, so again, Eur bank --> Eur bank is probably your best bet.
...however...
Due precisely to pathetic international services of British banks, an entire highly competitive industry of "international transfer services" have emerged in the UK, offering highly competitive rates on large transfers.
So, it may be worth comparing what your bank will charge vs. a "transfer service". I reckon your bank will still be the best bet ...or within a few Euros... But ASK! you might save hundreds.
OOPS! I misunderstood the question. I thought you meant Europe -- Ireland transfer.
In that case, you definitely need a transfer service that offers far better exchange rates than banks. A point or two difference in exchange rate can mean THOUSANDS in savings on large transfers.
Look up the many services available, such as XE.com. We use an Fx trading platform, which isn't a transfer service and is not in that business, although facilitates foreign transfers - but membership is a lot more cumbersome process, and is more than what you need.
