Moving to Cork with pets from UK
 

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at potentially moving to Cork by April next year. My partner is Spanish and currently living in Cork and after over a year of long distance in the middle of COVID, we've decided moving in is the best option. Originally he was going to move here but with the complicated visa process and other factors, we are now looking at the Republic of Ireland. Additionally I'm 27 and have always wanted to live in another country, experience new things outside of my birth town and Ireland seems a close to home experience. (My grandparents are Irish and I also have some family in Cork to support)

My problem right now is that I own 2 pet rats and a place of my own with my own furniture. I have already looked at putting stuff in storage, that isn't a problem but I want to take some things with me on the ferry, the rats large cage for example and I want to bring my car with me.

Also, I know it's a discussion I need to have with my company but I was hoping to stay in my current position but just work remotely, I'm a project manager in IT and have worked remotely for 2 years with no future plans of going back to the office and I wondered what I would need to do to working for a UK company in Ireland.

So my questions are; can you transport pets via ferry? (If anyone has transported small animals via ferry before any advice would be much welcomed!)
Would you be able to give any advice on moving your UK car to Ireland (insurance, tax etc)?
And is there any advice working for a UK company in Ireland?

​​​​​​I hope this question doesn't come off terribly but I'm also quite curious to see how the British/Irish relations are in the Cork area? My partner seems to get a lot of bad comments thrown at him when he says his partner is English, and me driving around Ireland with a GB license plate puts me on edge a little.

You can find information below: Regarding bad comments about English, I suppose it just depends with what type of people you hang out with. Let's face it, Brits have a bad reputation abroad anyway and when you go to Spain it probably doesn't bother you. If you would go by that then an English person can't go to Scotland, a German can't live in England and someone from County Dublin can't live in Galway. If your partner is Spanish you probably know that some people from the Basque Country don't see themselves as Spanish and you just have to look at Catalunya. In reality the majority of people aren't interested and there are people from all over the world living in Ireland. Seeing GB license plates is nothing unusual here. I was driving through Westport on Sunday and every 5th car was probably a foreign reg (NI, GB, France, Germany etc.). Since Brexit there seems to be a lot of wealthy Brits buying property along the coast there.

Even if you do not have to pay VRT, you must still register your vehicle when you come to Ireland. You can find information on VRT reliefs and exemptions, and VRT reduction for certain electrical vehicles for certain electric vehicles, on Revenue’s website.

Transferring residence: If you are moving to live in Ireland, when you apply for a VRT exemption, you must meet certain requirements as regards your vehicle and your residency both here and abroad. You can find information about when to apply for exemption, the evidence you need and the application forms in the Revenue leaflet, Transfer of Residence.

Temporary exemptions: In certain cases foreign-registered vehicles may be imported into Ireland temporarily by a non-resident without the requirement to pay VRT or register the vehicle. You can find information about Foreign Registered Vehicles Temporary Exemptions on the Revenue website.

If you are moving to Ireland and are among those exempt from paying VRT you cannot sell your vehicle for more than 12 months after the vehicle is registered. If you are required to pay VRT, then you can sell your vehicle here in Ireland when you wish, once it has been registered.

Thanks a lot for posting the info, it's helped a lot. Most of it seems pretty straight forward, it seems the biggest issue is the rats

Rats and their importation is addressed here. If you are going to be renting you may find some landlords can be a little less than enlightened. You will bump in to so many people who if they are not English, have no end of family with English connections. Look at the link re your furry friends.

Nice to see you moving to Cork be sure to check out the beaches.
I live in Crosshaven and am moving to Alicante in February.
