Default Ireland votes to change citizenship law

The Irish have voted to allow the government to change the law which grants Irish citizenship automatically to all those born in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Children born in Ireland or Northern Ireland after the enabling legislation is passed will be Irish citizens automatically if at least one parent is:

- an Irish citizen; or
- a British citizen; or
- a permanent resident of Ireland or the UK; or
- has lived legally (although not on a student visa or awaiting an asylum claim determination) in Ireland or Northern Ireland for 3 years in the 4 years preceding the child's birth.

Information on the draft legislation as it currently stands is at:

Default Re: Ireland votes to change citizenship law

The necessary legislation has now been passed by the Irish Parliament and the Irish government has announced it will commence on 1 January 2005.

No child born before that date will be affected by the new law.
