Interim period / medical cover
Good Morning
My mother is joining me in Ireland from the UK - She is 75 years old and is on Warfarin , until her medical card is set up which could take - 4 months how would she go about medical care in the meantime ? ( Ie her monthly Warfarin checks) would she be covered if not does anyone know of an insurance that would cover?
Thanks a mill

Hi Suomi,
If she doesn't have a medical card she will need to pay for everything. She could buy private insurance but would need a policy that would cover monthly checks. Doctor's fees here for private patients are approximately €50-€60 per visit and not everything is covered under the medical card. For example each item on prescription costs €2.50 in the pharmacy with a medical card. When you apply for a medical card your GP has to stamp your application. Your best bet is to try to sign on with your nearest gp as a private patient while waiting for the medical card. If your parent only needs a monthly gp visit, it would probably still be cheaper than buying private health insurance even if you can claim some of it back.
