Help! Irish Passport Question
Hello all!
I am beginning the daunting task of finding and then collating evidence to apply for an Irish passport. My grandma was born in Cork ROI so I’m less to believe I’ll be able to apply for a passport now. I looked at the evidence I need to provide and with some work and digging I’ll be able to but I have one issue. My parent (who’s mother is Irish) and I do not have contact and I don’t know where she is. They list I need a copy of her passport or ID 😔 will this mean I can’t apply? I have emailed the passport authority but no reply and I imagine they are snowed under with applications.
Thanks
James

Re: Help! Irish Passport Question
I’m not sure what that is so I imagine not. My gran is Irish but moved to Scotland where my mother was born.
What should I do? Any help is appreciated!

Ah right I see!
Was a bit confused and I’ve said the wrong thing I think. In order to apply to become an Irish citizen through my gran I need my mothers ID notarised it seems.

I would think that as your applying for the passport thru your grandparent that the application rules of what to provide if relevant only relate to the section under grandparents and not your mum.

The OP needs to apply for Irish citizenship through the Foreign Births Register before he can apply for a passport. He'll need to provide all the required documents in order for that to happen.

Re: Help! Irish Passport Question
Can anyone tell me how a birth certificate can be produced for a grandfather born before the Dublin Record Office was burnt down in 1922 - in order to claim Irish Citizenship(to get Irish Passport)? I have tried all the online sites - church records etc. How can the citizenship be denied if the birth certificate record was destroyed in 1922? It must affect a lot of people. Is there any point in asking a Irish solicitor to try to help?

Re: Help! Irish Passport Question
I would think that local census and baptismal certs would help. I would source them first yourself and then correspond directly to the passport office higher executive officer and await a response.

Apply to the city of origin and church archives if need be. My nephew got his from the ancestral records in Cork

Re: Help! Irish Passport Question
Thanks for replies. Most of the Irish census were also destroyed for many of the years - I read some were even pulped because of a shortage of paper (only in Ireland!). It was a long time ago. I do not know where the man was actually born as my parents separated when I was 2 and my father and his family were taboo! My father was always described as ''Irish'' (but he was born in England). I can only find this Irish grandfather on an English census saying he was born in ''Ireland''. I knew that! I don't think that is enough. Also he had the most common of Irish names! Was actually searching last night but found nothing.

Re: Help! Irish Passport Question
Your problem appears to be that your grandfather had a common name and you don't know where he was born rather than the 1922 fire. Does his death or marriage certificates give you any further clues? Or the birth certificates of his children?

Re: Help! Irish Passport Question
Thanks Brit in Paris. Yes I don't know where he was born - just a vague memory from childhood - that he was from Dublin but that may be because as children we did not know any other place in Ireland! His first name was Daniel and surname equally common Irish! In one document only he has middle name of John. He moved to Liverpool and worked for the Railway Company - which is on my father's birth certificate. I got my grandfather's marriage certificate - married in England when he was working for railways. His own father on this marriage cert. was David and he was a farmer - does not say where from!. That's all I can find - which are all from English records. Because of above - I was asking if an Irish solicitor would be able to find anything /be able to help at all -do you think?. I know they are snowed down with Brexit for this sort of thing. I have contacted some solicitors in Ireland - they want payment in advance of any research they might do. (I have my grandfather's surname).

I’m not sure what a solicitor could do for you. An experienced Irish genealogist on the other hand may prove invaluable.

Re: Help! Irish Passport Question
Thanks BritinParis for your advice. I had thought to go to solicitor in Ireland because I do not believe the birth cert. can be found and there must be other cases like this so perhaps an Irish solicitor will know if the matter has been taken to court previously on grounds the birth cert. required was destroyed by civil unrest - and what the out come was or if it would be a legal non -starter. But I may try a genealogist if I can find one not trying to sell in advance a well bound folio of my family tree (very unlikely on Irish side)!
