Default Moving in 2020, Should I apply for passport?

I've been living and working in the US for the past 5 years, I was born in the UK to an Irish Father (And Irish grandmother on my mothers side), Obviously with an Irish father I don't need to apply for the Foreign Birth Registry, but I wondered would it be worth applying for an Irish passport, we're not moving till January 2020 meaning Post-Brexit, I didn't want to risk waiting and then when I walk into the Gardai district HQ with a British passport trying to get my US Citizen spouse residency I'd be declined due to not being an EU passport holder.

Is there a possibility this could happen without an Irish passport?

As it stands, no, but things can change and in any case if you want to move to the RoI and wish to be treated as an Irish citizen then obtaining your Irish passport before you leave the US would be a smart move as would acquiring US citizenship if you haven’t already done so. Processing times for the latter can extremely lengthy depending on your location so that’s something to get started on now.

Are you sure? If you were born in NI then you qualify without but maybe you would have to apply if you were born say in London.

Not true at all, if you check the DFA website it clearly states if you have a parent born on the island of Ireland the offspring is automatically an Irish citizen, if I only had a grandparent I would have to register.

i have the long form version of my birth certificate which states my fathers name and birthplace Irish Republic.

Irish citizen parents born in Ireland

If either of your parents was an Irish citizen who was born in Ireland, then you are automatically an Irish citizen, irrespective of your place of birth. If you are an Irish citizen, you can apply for an Irish passport. You do not need an Irish passport in order to be an Irish citizen but having an Irish passport is evidence that you are an Irish citizen.

Agree with all of above. You still need to apply for Irish passport and should do it now to save any hassle. My nephew has applied and got his. He is a British citizen but travels round Europe frequently for work. He had to obtain his grandfather's birth cert as proof along with some other docs.

Thank you! I think you're right, better to be safe than sorry, I'm going to apply for it before the end of the year so I have it ahead of time.

Make sure you research the Irish immigration rules for bringing in an non-EU spouse. Hopefully they are not as onerous and expensive as the UK's.
