Default Getting an Irish Passport?

We qualify initially as our grandfather was Irish. I don't need it now as I am a full Spanish resident now.
But my younger brother is looking at it now as it will help him.

Google agrees that the Irish Grandfather is enough but I have found a couple of stumbling blocks

A couple of sources state that you have to live in Ireland for 3 years first.
And another states that your grandfather must have an Irish passport when you are born. Hmm, he died before my brother was born.

Does he have any chance of getting one. Has anybody else been through the process?

Any help or information gratefully received

Gracia

These two sections on this page seem to be the important bit:

Irish citizen parent born outside Ireland

Or

Citizenship through descent from Irish grandparent

In the table it looks like your brother is example D?

Another alternative is you getting Spanish nationality and then getting reagrupaciĆ³n familiar por familia extensa, but that'll probably take a while.

One extremely happy Irish national here who has been through the process!

You do not have to live in Ireland for three years and you do not have to be born before your grandparent died. Something seems to have got mixed up there.

If you are applying for Irish citizenship via a grandparent born on the island of Ireland, you first need to apply to the Irish Foreign Birth Register (FBR) and the current waiting time is approximately two years - they are swamped with British applications due to the wretched Brexit. The FBR will then issue a certificate and then you can apply for a passport and (optional) a rather brilliant passport card which looks like an ID card.

If you have a parent born on the island of Ireland, you can apply for a passport immediately.

You may have Spanish residency but believe me, you would benefit from retaining your EU citizenship so you and your brother should consider making a sibling application to the FBR. My parents' neighbours have managed to do it successfully.

This is a very friendly and helpful forum where you can get advice from people with first hand experience:

Good luck.
