Anyone out there? Feeling alone...in Leitrim/Cavan
Hello all
My heading sounds a bit desperate but I moved to leitrim in Ireland 4 years ago, with hubby, but didnt realise how difficult it would be to make friends with Irish women.
I myself am German but lived many years in the UK before moving, so I thought I ask if any English (or German!) people are out there who would like to meet hubby and me for cuppa.
Anyway, hope to hear from someone out there, in the wild west
Mia

Hi There
Sorry that you are finding it all a bit unfriendly, I don't know what is up with them? For all the advertised welcoming ways of the Irish anyone would think that you would need a stick to fight them off
The usual suggestion is to join local social groups, as that way people can see you in a more obviously approachable setting. Perhaps the locals are a bit iffy about having an "outsider" in their midst. They might even turn out to be just plain ignorant, who knows?
If the worst comes to the worst, attend mass at the local church, after a few weeks of that, the locals won't be able to help themselves but to ask who you are and what are you up to?
Sorry I cannot help more but I have never been in that area of Ireland. I wish you luck.

I know this reply is late but not logged on for a while. I hope things have sorted themselves out for you and you've found some like minded companions.
I am in a very similar situation ( am in Cavan ). Moved here 3 years ago and have encountered lots of friendly people, but that's as far as it goes! No one wants to socialise or have a coffee or go to the cinema. I volunteer in 2 charity shops and I help with the elderly. I am not religious and would not go to church. The Irish are very family orientated and that's it. They have their family and friends and don't want an outsider. They either know or are related to everyone!
I am very happy living over here but I know I will never find a lifelong friend. I just stick to my UK friends by phoning and writing.
Best wishes

Have just found this site and thread and could totally relate to what you have said. And I do exactly the same and fill my free time with my family and friends back in England as those friendships feel secure and committed. I am in Fermanagh, very close to the border, and I work in Cavan. If you’re still on this site, would love to make contact.
Take care

Hi Hannah
Not having much luck 😕. Clicked on the drop down box but there are no email addresses on there 😬
Maybe you will have more luck clicking on my user name? I did send you a private message but it came up as ' this person is unable to receive pm' 😟
Hopefully one way or another we'll get there!

Ive had a message saying I can’t send or receive PMs as I’ve not posted enough times. So maybe if I keep posting then eventually I can???

Hi!
sorry I haven't replied. Things have been a bit chaotic the last few months but I think we are finally settling in now. (We did want to sell up and leave, had house on market etc but then changed our mind.)
Have you guys met up yet? Would love to join you!
