Default xmas in paris - infos needed!

Hello NG!!!!

We're a group of four 26/28 yrs italians, we visited france 2 times before,
but we've never been to Paris.
Last year we spent 5 days on x-mas in Berlin, and we had a really gooood
time, visiting low crowded (almost empty) museums, and shopping in xmas
typical markets and enjoyng x-mas special sales (in italy prices are usually
higher on x-mas!!!).

So we decided to repeat this abroad xmas experience in Paris!! We booked an
apartment in montmartre, and we're going by car. Can you help us getting
some infos?!?!?

We planned 2 full days to visit Versailles and Eurodisney, but we'd like to
visit pere lachaise cemetery too, and obviously all the "standard tour"
monuments.

- museums are open on xmas??? i think churches are, but, better ask!!
- please, please tell us the more you know about tourist traps!!!
- best time to visit the "eternal crowded" "long queued" Louvre!!!
- are there discount cards on public transportation? and a card with
discounts on museums too?
- x-mas markets in paris
- good shopping areas (with good prices too!)
- great or maybe particular things to see outside the main
monuments/churches
- good pubs or cafès for the night

THANKS A LOT
Laura

Salut NG ! ! ! !
principal
- bons pubs cafès pour la nuit
MERCIII!!

Not if you are 26+.
For the Louvre, it's reduced price if you arrive at 15h or later.

In the Louvre they start pushing you out of the door half an hour before closing time.

I know I've been a victim of it.
On my first visit was closed unexpectedly to allow Wily Brandt a
private visit. Saw WB but not the inside of the Louvre.
On my second visit a thunderstorm started as soon as we were inside
and as there was no artificial light in those days I didn't see a lot.
On my third visit success!

What I do to resolve both points is to by a "national museum pass" that
is valid for 1 or 3 days, and to buy it in one of the least known
museum rather than at le louvre. e.g. you go to the Rodin museum (very
intersting if you love sculpture), buy the pass there and then go to
the louvre. You enter through a separate way, without queueing !

Enjoy your stay in Paris

Hi Laura, I am from Scotland. I have been to Paris a few times, though
not at Christmas. When I was there last September-November the winter
lights were fantastic. I expect it is even better at Christmas time.

The best way to experience the enchanting city lights is to get up to
a high viewpoint!

The Eiffel Tower is the obvious one; it costs about 10,50 euros to get
to the top (well worth it) and is 'sparkles' for 10 minutes on the
hour every hour from about 5.00p.m in the Winter. It does get very
busy so go early morning or late afternoon. I think the best time to
go is when the daylight is fading (and hopefully the sun setting) and
then you can also hang around to see the lights of the city at night.
(Allow time for queuing though!)

Another stunning evening viewpoint is from the Arc de Triomphe, which
is in the middle of a busy roundabout on the Place du Général de
Gaulle. You pay a small fare to climb the spiral staircase to the top.
From here you can see the streets (including the Champs Elysees)
radiating from the rond-pont, as well as the Eiffel sparkling in the
distance.

The Tour Montparnasse is one of the highest viewpoints in the city.
You can go right out onto the roof, or if you can't face the cold you
can stay just one floor down and look out windows at the 360 degree
view.

Have a look on this site for the metro/RER ticket info. The Paris
Visite is a good pass to get for multi day travel:- www.ratp.fr
N.B. Don't take an open-topped bus tour in winter, unless you are well
wrapped-up! (brrrrrrr - still shivering!)

The museums should be less crowded at Christmas time, though I don't
know what entry charges are like. The only museum I remember visiting
was the musee erotica. Worth a look if you're up that part of town! In
fact, a stroll down the 'Red Light Disrict', Boulevard de Clichy, can
be quite entertaining. The Moulin Rouge is also there - very pricey
though, if you are hoping to go in.

Unfortunately, I never got the chance to sample the nightlife as I was
staying (and working) out of town. So i can't pass comment on the pubs
and clubs.

Disneyland Paris is easily reached from Paris. Just go to a metro
station and pick up the RER A line, destination 'Marne la Vallee'
(Parc Disneyland), takes about 35 minutes.
I would think 1 day in Disneyland will be enough, as it's very cold at
that time of the year and not much fun being outdoors all day long -
get there early though.

Hope this has been helpful!
Enjoy your trip!!!!!!!
