Default would you rent a car/bike in malta?

can anyone comment on whether renting a car or
scooter or bicycle in malta would be desirable
or practical? we'll be there for 9 days, just
wondering how we'll get around...

(any other must-not-miss or must-avoid tips
appreciated as well! thanks...)

I wouldnt bother, the place isnt very big, the roads
are full of potholes and they drive on the left

Seriously the local buses are cheap, taxis are easy enough
to find and you'll have no problem with the language.

For $16 you can buy a ticket entitling you to 7 days
unlimited bus travel on the Island

Dont miss the old city of Mdina its a fine example
of an unspoilt old walled Mediterranean city

There is has a comprehensive bus system. It is cheap, usually
frequent and runs reasonably late (though not "night club" late)
to most places.

We rented a scooter on our week long trip. It was one of the bigger ones
for two people. Zipped around the whole island, getting lost and soaking
wet most of the time but it was great of fun.

That's right. Maltese is very much like the Tunisian dialect of Arabic. No sweat.

The buses are also frequent and cover the island very well. They do tend
to come with square wheels, though.

No sweat.

Not fair. I spent three months there and never met a Maltese who wasn't
fluent in English.

The original poster asked for "must-sees". Here's my list

Obviously, walking the walls of Valetta.
The Grandmasters' Palace
The Maltese War Museum
Victoria on Gozo
The pre-historic ruins and Blue Grotto
The catacombs
Drinking capuccino on the seafront at Sliema
The Sunday morning flea market at Valetta
The grotto where St. Paul was imprisoned.

There's oodles of other stuff as well.

I especially thought "Faith" in the War Museum interesting. In 1941 the
RAF had only three ancient biplane fighters to defend the island against
the whole Italian Air Force. These were known as Faith, Hope and Charity
and Faith has been restored and is still there.
