There are quite a few in France, mainly in a couple of hotel chains.

Radio connection using the 2.4 GHz band between computers. Usually in the
form of an Access Point connected to some LAN (local area network) on which
PCs are hitched. Used particularly so you can roam about with a laptop
without trailing a wired connection to your parent system. It can also be
cheaper than laying a lot of wires around a building.. The laptop has a
"card" in it which provides the radio link to the Access Point. Typical
range 300 metres. No "hot" handover (unlike cell phones) so you can't roam
outside the area of the local hotspot without breaking the connection.
Original application usually within a building occupied by a company but now
"public" services are being offered at locations like airport, railway
stations and hotels. These are known as hot spots. They allow you to connect
to the Internet/World Wide Web and for your Email and "surfing".
The "official" name of the system is 802.11b (and g etc) which is the name
of the "rules" of the connections (refers to an IEEE committee and
definition document) but has been commercialised by naming it WiFi.
