There are moderated groups for people who want only dry bits of data. Watching the grass

Women are no good at trick questions.

For an example of how well that works, take a look at
misc.transport.air-industry, created as a moderated alternative to
rec.travel.air. Almost every single post comes from one of the moderators,
or is a thread hijacked from rec.travel.air.

Nobody uses moderated groups. They're either someone's (or some clique's)
private empire, or completely devoid of the conversation that keeps regular
posters interested.

I guess this thread started from a claim that unmoderated groups are
contaminated by few noisy bastards.

But, you haven't been posting here that much lately, have you? :)

But that was due mainly to the hounding of Yves (whatever
his surname is) who set himeself up as the arbiter of what
is and is not appropriate to the newsgroup! He complained
that Jack was a spammer (which he was NOT), and persuaded
Jack's ISP to cancel his account. (FWIW, I think it was the
birth of a much welcomed grandchild that diverted Jack's
attention from us - not any "off topic" posts.)

I still don't understand why they consider "complaining" to
be necessary! Is it so difficult to skip over threads whose
titles indicate they have nothing to interest you? (If
I've no interest in a particular discussion, I don't bother
to post to the subject thread to say so - I just mark
"thread read" and go on to the next one.)

Yes, with you as the moderator, no doubt. (It was you who
drove away Jack and a couple other posters who were
universally welcomed here by everyone but you!)

Its very true. I used to frequent a newsgroup that became moderated,
mainly due to one extremely persistent troll (and the fact that there
was a near-duplicate but unused newsgroup that would stay unmoderated.
Suddenly even related posts became denied as "off-topic", if they weren't
dull and technical...and nearly everyone moved to the unmoderated group
(including the troll). Many that stuck around got better at filtering.

While I agree with the original poster that there is a lot of off-topic
(or only remotely on-topic) personal chatter, I would also add that it
tends to be in off-topic (or only remotely on-topic) subjects. So its
simply a matter of ignoring those subjects. Generally a filter isn't
needed.

I filter based on some words (e.g. Iraq, Frog) and cross-post references
(e.g. alt.politics.*), but looking at Google it doesn't appear that these
are really needed at this point in time. And who knows, I might be missing
some info on where to get the best frog legs in Europe.

You would consider that a BAD thing? Most people with a few
ounces of brainmatter can quickly figure out how to scroll
past posts that don't interest them, whether or not they
understand how to set filters (or want to bother doing so).
To many posters to Usenet, "moderated" equates to
"censored", a condition we prefer to avoid whenever possible!

You and I seem to be kindred spirits, Lana! (At least about
some things.) Most of us here, I think, look upon this
newsgroup as being in the nature of a travel "chat room",
where we can discuss not only specific travel subjects, but
also the interesting tangents which arise from the initial
topic.

Wow- I obviously wasn't reading around then. I remember his posts, and I
enjoyed them.
