Why does US Customs watch you while getting on a plane to Europe in the US??

Every time I have boarded a plane in the USA bound for Europe there have
been 3 to 4 US Customs agents in the jet-way watching everyone board the
plane.
Why is this?
Shouldn't Customs only be worried about people getting off planes in the USA
returning from Europe or any other country?

incoming people and goods but the watch what goes out also

And there is a significant degree of co-operation between Customs officials
of various countries. In some cases, it is more effective for them to watch
the route taken by, say, a drug smuggler, than to stop and arrest them at a
mid- or starting-point of their journey. If something is being smuggled
internationally, it is more benficial to discover its origin and destination
then to halt it at the point of discovery.

Because they look very important, standing there? Or they have so many
security people that they fill up the airport until the jet-ways? On
american airports you pass a dozen very impressing copies of John
Wayne and Rambo on the way to a plane, but you can enter the plane
with a lethal weapon:
Last winter I went to a trip thru US with several air connections,
also to Mexico and back. A rather big pocket knife was in my little
backpack I use as a hand luggage. I thought I had lost it, but it has
slid under the interior bottom of the bag. It went thru several
checkpoint, was X-rayed many times, in Dallas they even emptied all
bags and grabbed inside.
When I turned the bag upside down at home to get out the sand of
mexican beaches, it fell out!

And do most of the goods going out do so in the hands of boarding
passengers?

Maybe, but isn't the jetway a very poor place to be looking for
non-exportable items and/or persons who must not leave the country? After
all, customs and immigration has hours before that to check whatever needs
to be checked.

Well, the U.S. government turned an entire country upside and overthrew its
government looking for such weapons, without success, so it has to turn
_somewhere_. Of course, there's always Syria ... hmm.
I guess "weapons of mass destruction" sounds a lot more noble than
"Lebensraum."

And they do this by standing in the jetway and hoping they'll recognize one
of the thousands of potential bad guys as he walks past? No wonder the War
on Drugs seems so futile.

Perhaps they haven't had time to ship them in yet.
Or better still, the carriers mis-routed them and they're in a hangar in Dulles
Airport.
