Default where to meet near eastern Tuscany?

My friend lives in a remote location near the town of Bibbiena, in the
eastern jutting-out bit of Tuscany, close to the borders with
Emilia-Romagna, Marche and Umbria.

We try to meet in reasonable-sized places that are not too far for him to
drive to and not too difficult for me to get to (from the UK) by plane and
train. To date we've met up in Arezzo and Pisa - any other ideas? (We're
not big fans of Firenze - it's too crowded for both our tastes.)

Urbino would be a possibility but I'm not sure it's all that easy to reach
directly from the UK - I've only done it as part of a road trip. What's
Perugia like?

Urbino can be reached by flying into Ancona (Ryanair) then taking the
train to Pesaro and a bus to Urbino. There is a train station at the
airport which will take you to the main train station in Ancona, and
you would catch the train to Pesaro there. There is also bus service
from the airport to the Ancona train station.

That said, Perugia is a very nice small city. It has Etruscan and
Roman ruins, and it, like Urbino, is a university town. It's bigger
and more bustling than Urbino, and maybe not quite as pretty.

Thanks. Perugia sounds like it might fit the bill, and I imagine it's on a
main train line?

Perugia is on the FS line from Terontola to Foligno and Fabriano. Just doing
a swift check on www.trenitalia.com for 2 May (next ordinary weekday) at 9
o'clock shows five trains from Florence between 0909 and 1409, of which two
require a change at Terontola. Five trains from Rome are shown between 0936
and 1414, of which two are direct, while two have changes at Foligno and one
at Terontola. (If using this site, enter station names in Italian - Roma,
Firenze.)

There is also a local private railway, the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra (FCU),
which has sometimes run direct trains to Rome. It is running such a service
at present http://www.fcu.it/ but is extremely limited an not of much use
to the tourist.

Never been there, just heard of it ...

Apparently the place is reachable by bus from Arezzo or perhaps Firenze
see http://www.lfi.it/bacino_utenza/GrafoEnd.gif

Not by train (I hoped it was on some minor lines crossing the
Appennines, but they are far north AFAICU... but information is unclear
... apparently the bus company LFI was formerly a rail company, or
includes it but the pages of TFT say "site being updated").

I see there are several interesting minor places in the province of
Arezzo between Arezzo and Bibbiena.

Urbino is a very nice place to visit, but unfortunately has no longer a
train connection (it had 30 years ago), I suppose one should take a bus
from Pesaro or Fano (nearest airports could be Rimini or Ancona) i.e.
from the Adriatic coast. It's "the other side of the mountains".

Perugia is reachable by train although I've never done it that way, I
believe there are two separate railways (a State one and a private one),
but stations should be down in the plain while the historic centre
(quite interesting as well) is up on a hill (or few hills). It could
also have an airport of its own.

Are you considering Siena (reachable by train, again station in the
plain and city on the hills) ?

There used to be a train from Arezzo to Bibbiena - I took it two, or maybe
it was three, years ago - but it was run by a private company, not
Trenitalia. Probably that company was LFI, I can't remember. A beautiful
journey BTW.

Yes, that's another thought.

Sansepolcro. Direct train from Perugia. Plenty of buses. Nice little town.
Small enough not to get lost and miss each other. Several good places to
eat. Really nice people. Not many tourists(They are all queuing up outside
the Uffizi in Florence, or are all on a train going from Rome to Venice or
Venice to Florence - very few are actually looking at Italy).

Most important, not far from Bibbiena and, if you get bored waiting, you
could always go along and look at 'The greatest little picture in the world'
if you would believe Aldous Huxley.

Aldous "Where's my guide-dog?" Huxley? No, I wouldn't.
