When is peak foliage in southern and northern Bavaria?
My wife and I are planning a trip and want to go when the foliage will be at
its best.

What do you consider to be its best? I have been there in the second week of
May and the leaves were pretty well at their peak, as compared to northern
Germany where, two days earlier, they were only partly out.

I am using New England in late September and early fall as my basis for
great foliage.

and a few kilometers can make a great change in foliage during both the
spring and fall. I live in Stuttgart, and the prominent maple tree

having lived in germany for a few years and traveled in the alps in
October I'd guess mid to late October would be the best time for the
trees. But, that said, they don't have the color that we have on the
east coast of the US.
Expect some yellows, very few red or oranges.

If you want fall colours, Germany is the wrong place to go. They don't have

My wife and I lived just southwest of Munich for two years (returned to
states last Sept), were born and raised in New England, and I felt the
foliage was quite excellent in Germany. Especially by the Frankenwald in
northern Bavaria. I just don't recall when the peak was.

Starnberg, and the reds were spectacular. And this is coming from someone
born and raised in New England.
But I don't recall when it was. We'll shoot for mid October.
