Is there much to do in Cadiz besides the beaches? If not, I may drop it from
my itinerary.

Beaches? Don't bother going there for the beaches! It's a lot more
interesting than some piece of sand!
It's basically a _very_ old port town - high buildings, narrow alleyways and
great plazas, some of which probably haven't changed for centuries, and a
slightly seedy (but definitely not threatening) but relaxed atmosphere - and
lots of great seafood. It's just a fantastic place to wander around and try
a few cafes..... If you just want relics, museums, and touristy activities,
then don't bother with it.

Sir Francis Drake liked it.
The local beaches are mostly away from the old city, except La Caleta,
the rest is surrounded by seawalls. If you want "sites" to tick off,
there probably isnt much, on the other hand if you like interesting
cities.......

You can spend some time exploring the many watchtowers ! (Unfortunately you
do not get a good view from the narrow streets)
The one to visit is right in the centre of the old city called TORRE TAVIRA.
http://www.torretavira.com/
I went up it again last week. Took a few pictures and made this panorama
(it's a biggish file 350kb) -
http://www.spaincostaluz.com/cadiz_torre.html
And please make sure that you cross the famous Bay on the small ferry boat
(El Vapor) to El Puerto de Santa Maria. A round trip 'ida y vuelta' is only
EUROS 4.50 and makes a great excursion on a sunny day. You can get a much
better idea of the historical importance of the Bay.
And if you speak a little Spanish then an exploration of the Tapas bars
could be an excellent way of getting to know the city !
And make sure you see the new EL CORTES INGLES store. It is very nice
indeed. but of course there are many interesting places to visit as well.

I couldn't agree more; Cadiz was a pleasant surprise to me when I
visited the area, very authentic, relaxed atmosphere, and good food;
There's just nothing special to see or do in Cadiz, which is probably
the reason that it's (still) such a nice place...
