Hi all,
I'm trying to get a better understanding of the typical weather in
Grenoble. i.e. how hot does it get in summer, and for how long. How
cold in winter?
Weather.com doesn't seem to have data for Grenoble
http://www.weather.com/activities/ot...locid=FRXX0153
Cheers, Andy.

I responded to a question about Grenoble a couple of hours ago.
I went there in mid-January 2003, and it was overcast, mild (10C ish)
and foggy. Nowhere near cold enough to snow. Perhaps I caught it at a
bad time, but I was not impressed by the place. As I said in that other
thread, on the Sunday it felt like the deadest place in Europe.
Not sure about the summer, but it may well get swamped by tourists.

My preferred site for climate averages worldwide is www.weatherbase.com
It's quite simple to use, and at least you get average monthly maximum and
minimum temperatures for many locations.
Just remember to select Fahrenheit or Celsius as you start.

Sorry about that - Grenoble is missing from weatherbase, first time that
site has let me down. A spot of googling has led to:
http://www.world66.com/europe/france...le/lib/climate where
there's a useful couple of charts for you.

There is a Detailed History and Climate somewhere in the page. Go find it by yourself.

No Grenoble on there that I can see
http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/c...p3?c=FR&refer=
That site is useful, but you must beware of the "years on record" bit;
100 years of records will give a better indication than 5 years.
http://www.wunderground.com
includes it, but this site very often works using data from airports*,
in this case LFLS which is "Saint Geoirs" wherever that is.
http://www.wunderground.com/history/...lyHistory.html
*For example "Clear" is used to translate the code CAVOK, which means
visibility >10km and no cloud below 5000 feet. So it can be overcast
with cloud at 6000 and Wunderground will say "clear". However it's a
great site for finding out what the temperature was on a particular
day.

No data available! Again! I don't know what's with Grenoble, but the UK
weather site can't come up with averages either. No it's not us guys that
are helpless. Magda, I don't think you understand the difference between
weather and climate.

Yes, I seem to remember somewhere that a 30 years on record figure was
desirable for averages to accurately reflect the climate of an area. 5
years could represent an abnormal climatic period. There are of course
other difficulties in relying on averages, daily temperatures can fluctuate
considerably from the mean or averages in mountainous areas such as
Grenoble, whereas they may deviate only slightly in some tropical or island
areas. Temperatures decrease with elevation, so is the site at which
temperatures are measured representative of the location? The world seems
to be warming up, so you can quite reasonably expect a degree or two above
the average to be the norm.

What you don't understand is that no sane person gives a fig for "averages", that's why
it's hard to find them. One year is *never* like another - that's the only certitude you
can have. The historic may tell people what happened in some day in the past, but in no
way it indicates what's going to happen in five days' time, let alone in a month or two.
Et avec ceci je crois que j'ai assez parlé de la pluie et du beau temps - pour le reste de
l'année !

30 years is what the Met Office uses for averages. You're right that 5
years can easily represent an abnormal period (1998-2002 was
particularly wet in much of Britain for example). 10-15 years is OK,
but I think the longer the better. As for fluctuations, it's good to
have a longer period for which to give extreme maxima/minima.
As for the choice of sites, in Britain 150 metres/500 feet of altitude
can make a substantial difference, also large cities tend to be warmer
than the surrounding countryside, so using Gatwick airport as London
(as the "Rough Guide to Weather" seems to do) can be rather misleading.

Merci beaucoup for declaring me insane. Now please come up with a better
system for an indication of what the weather is likely to be for a
particular month of the year. I'm sure that if you can you'll be
approaching Bill Gates' fortune in no time at all.

No it doesn't... The above link tells me what the weather is at the
moment; not the climate over a typical year.
