I am a woman of a certain age and recently toured the red light district
of Amsterdam at night with no problem whatsoever -- I was quite
surprised at how young, fit and beautiful the women in the windows were
-- my only similar stroll was on the Reeperbahn in the 60s and the women
in the windows there were ugly

I have a lot of trouble imagining that anyone had any particularly
terrible experience strolling through this heavily populated area any
time before midnight

But in other countries they don't *make* themselves into a tourist
attraction.

My wife went to Holland to an Ice Speedway meeting with a group of British
fans. She took one of the other ladies for a tour of Amsterdam including the
red light area and they had no problems at all.

Hi,

ice speedway eh?

speedway bikes are rare in the US...

I've only seen them once when the local "new" harley dealership
sponsored an event at the local ice rink.

as an old british bike fan I was on the lookout for JAPs... but not a
jap in the bunch...

The JAP's went from the scene years ago replaced by European made engines.
They still have our type of non ice 'Speedway' in California. We went to the
World Final at the L.A. Colliseum when it was won by the later Chips star
Bruce Penhall in 1982. Ventura also had a Speedway meeting on when we were
there.

There's a heavy drug scene on the far side of the red-light district,
the side farthest from Damstraat. It's outside the district itself,
and it's hard to know why a tourist would be in that area, but perhaps
our curious cats got over there by mistake. But most of those guys
are too zonked out to threaten anybody!

Well, of course I've never been to Amsterdam, but I thought it sounded a
bit dubious, too! One of the advantages to "legalizing" prostitution,
marijuana, etc. is that you eliminate most of the "criminal" element who
deal in them when they're illegal. (It also means the trade can be
taxed - more income for the city/country!)

Hi,

in recent years the FAKE dope sellers have been dropping out of sight a
good bit... so there are fewer of them and less dogshit too.

compared to 10 years ago they're hardly there at all.

still THE BEST THING TO DO IS IGNORE THEM.

IF YOU WANT SOME CANNABIS (pot, hash, spacecake, etc) GO TO A LICENSED
COFFEE SHOP (green/white numbered license sticker right next to the door
usually... hey sjoerd have ya got a pic of a coffee shop license we can
show the folks?)

THE DOPE THEY SELL IS -ALL- FAKE ANYWAY.

Hi,

while taking pics of the working girls IS frowned upon and might get you
say... tossed in a canal won't get you stabbed to death.

and besides it's impolite.

No, it certainly did happen to someone just after I was there a few
years ago - according to the newspapers, TV etc. here in the UK
anyway. That sort of thing tends to be reported. Like the bloodbath
in that Italian restaurant in Amsterdam a few years ago.

Not that this sort of thing is unique to Amsterdam or the Netherlands
of course - but it does happen there from time to time.

Please remind me which bloodbath in an Italian restaurant. I only remember a
"bloodbath" in a Japanese restaurant where one drugs dealer killed another.
"Opgeruimd staat netjes", as we say in Dutch. :-)

Where would 'legalized marijuana, etc.' be sold? At Safeway? Liqour
stores? Or would it still be sold by the same dealers who now sell it
thus not doing away with the '"criminal" element' at all?

What if you want to get some ecstasy? If you bring one of those testing kits
I wonder how hard it is to get some of the real stuff?

the Dutch seem to have an admirable model with their coffee shops -- and
if it is legal why would the criminal element dominate? the whole point
of legalizing is to regulate and tax -- just as it is with liquor. Of
course drunks are often violent -- which is rarely an issue with those
who smoke dope.
