You haven't looked hard enough. There are lots of hotels in that
price range. They may not have an online presence, but they
exist. Check Google groups for messages here, and you'll find
numbers of recommendations.

Not worth the trouble. Better to take the ride over there if you want
to see the Lido, than to take it back to Venice which is where most
likely you will want to spend most of your time -- at all hours.

No, you should rethink your attitude a little.

It took me 2 minutes to get a $45 per night quote in Venice, double, in
February. Rates vary quite a bit by season, but several of these have maxium
rates in the $100-120 range

Yes, that is exactly the point. I'm sure these rooms are $100 a night at
SOME time of the year. But they are all $200+ in April, which is when I'm
going.

I think that's what we paid. It was May of '01. I don't recall whether
we had a 'phone or a television set. I know we didn't have a private
bathroom but we never had to wait for someone to get out.

Indeed.

People come here for advice. They hope to get good advice. It's not
often that the advice tendered is as excellent as yours!

Let's Go usually quotes the high season rate, so the prices I quoted you
were valid in high season. I found a hotel under $100 in Venice during
Carnival, which has to be one of the most expensive times to be there.
My daughter stayed at the same hotel during the summer, again for less
than $100. It was called the Minerva, and it's near the train station.
I'm sorry I no longer have the number, but you'll find many similar
hotels listed in Let's Go.

absolutely -- to spend all that time and money and then commute with the
day trippers into the place you want to visit is insane -- one of the
values of a hotel is that you can go back during the day to change
clothes, or drop purchases, or take a nap or whatever before hitting the
street again for the evening -- commuters either lug it all or get back
to their hotel and can't face the commute again and miss out on the
delights of morning and evening in a place as evocative as Venice

My brother stayed in Lido last fall, and he really liked it. He said
if he ever returned to Venice he would stay there again.

You know Jen--maybe we should start telling people the opposite in order to
keep the prices down!

makes sense to me and I am going to also start telling everyone to take
guided tours and stay near the station and avoid renting apartments as
well

I just got back from Venice and stayed on the Lido. I wouldn't stay
there again. While the waterbus ride is nice it makes it difficult to
go back and take off your shoes in the middle of the day, then get
your act together to go out again. I stayed at the Villa Mabapa and
certainly wouldn't stay there again - way rude front desk people!
