You can't watch US satellites in Europe, as their 'footprint' (area of
ground covered by the satellite's beam) doesn't extend this far. However
some US broadcasters rent capacity on European satellites. Whether they show
the same programmes as in the US is another matter.

Some British satellite dealers are well accustomed to supplying systems to
English-speaking ex-pats in those countries.

Try googling news:alt.satellite.tv.europe

The site at
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/channels.htm
has some information about receiving free-to-air channels, from a UK
perspective.

They show nothing at all close to the US version.

CNN is as close as you can get, but as a rolling new channel
it couldn't be nuch different, but the other channels have all
of what passes for entertainment stripped out in order to
avoid losing the fees for selling their progs in Europe.

Most of them make watching paint dry look interesting.

This is to receive Sky

You can get CNBC on cable in parts of Europe - it's business news in the
week, entertainment at weekends, AFAIK - and also CNN. MTV is also around
though I'm not sure if it's cable or sat or both. There is or was a
network called AFN (I imagine it stands for Armed Forces Network)
broadcasting a selection of US TV shows but I don't know if civilians can
sign up for it.

http://www.sat-address.com/tv/Europe.html may be helpful.

If it's US news you're after, you can get newspapers in major cities
(USAToday, NYT, Wall St. Journal and the Paris-published but
American-focused International Herald Tribune are the most common by far).
Time and Newsweek are also quite widely available.

Satellites carrying domestic programming from North or South America are
either below the horizon as seen from Europe, or their beam is focussed on
America and thus leaves no useable signal in Europe.

There is NBC and CNN (and some more) in Europe, but these are not the same
channels available in the US, but different versions specifically produced
for Europe and beamed across the Atlantic on purpose. Much of the
programming overlaps though.

We have CNN and NBC on cable network here in Germany, but you have to be
an addict to watch them.

AFN is Armed Forces Network. You can watch it if you have an American
NTSC TV and live near a US military base which broadcasts it. It is
geared to the people in uniform and thus you'll get sports, idiot
sit-coms, and news (from one or more of the networks IIRC).

Both MTV and CNN are European versions and differ
from the US offering although CNN Europe does take
some of its feed from the USA

Both. Of course that's not MTV USA but European versions. There used to
be one MTV Europe, now there are even many national ones.

You can pick it up terrestrially in the clear near American military
installations. You mjust be _very_ near though, as the transmitters
usually cover only a few square kilometers. Their number has been reduced
in recent years too, but some are still around in various parts of
Europe.

Their programming is also on satellite, but scrambled. You can't
subscribe to it without being member of the US forces.

There are plenty of things on satellite not owned by Mr Murdoch.

Sunday show.

Depends on where you are staying, but why in the world travel all the
way to Europe and waste time watching American television?

In the countries I've visited, the only "American" channels I ever found
were CNN and MSNBC, both of which broadcast only news (mostly business
news, in the case of MSNBC). However, I did find some entertainment
programming (in English) from BBC. If what you're looking for is the
same programs you watch "back home", unless you watch PBS a lot you
won't see them. Even the English language news broadcasts will give you
a much broader picture of the news than you see at home (which some
Americans may find disturbing, although I thought it a refreshing change).

This is probably a silly question, but if you're spending all the money
a trip to Europe will cost you, wouldn't you rather use your time to see
the country, not to watch TV in your hotel room?

Yup...I don't watch the crappy US channels at home so why would I want to
see them whilst travelling? Besides which it's pretty easy to keep up with
the news via the internet...there are plenty of internet cafes, etc. all
around. And of course there is always the BBC as you mentioned...and
English language press in many places.
