Unlock my GSM phone?
I am confused after reading many many posts to this group. Please be
kind.
My daughter purchased a Sagem MYX-2 phone on a T-Mobile
"pay-as-you-go" plan while she was attending college in the UK this
past spring semester. The phone had a UK-based number. She also used
the phone successfully in Switzerland, Germany, France and Italy
through her T-Mobile account.
I am traveling to Italy in a few weeks, and would like to take this
phone with me and buy a cheap, non-T-Mobile pre-paid sim card when I
arrive. Will this phone work as-is with such a card, or do I need to
do something to "unlock" it, etc.
Thanks for your help.
.

You'll have to pay somebody to unlock it.

It's a shame it's not a Nokia - most of those are easy to unlock yourself
(free!).

i just went on line with a search Sagem UNlaock MYX-2 and it looks like
your daughter's phone requries a cable hook up to unlock. My NEC did too,
but I had the cable as a part of the synch program for the the phone and my
database.

Get someone else with the right equipment and knowledge to unlock the Sagem
phone. You need know-how and experience to unlock phones using data lead and
software. If you put the wrong code more than a few times, the phone will
stop working and will need its firmware reflashed at a service center. There
may be a phone store that can unlock it in US, and certainly in Italy at an
independent dealer (not franchised to a particular network). About 15 euro.

Re: Unlock my GSM phone?
i think that unlockign phones is not something common in italy. That's
because GSM phones sold in italy are never locked. (exception being the new
UMTS phones by 3)

not, it's the market leader that needs to be catched
why is this?
are they prettier (no)
are they 'better' (probably not, what extra features does any phone have)
is their MMI eaiser (apparently it's a bitch, until you get used to it)
are they cheaper (how!, You can have almost any phone you want
for 1 Euro).
so what is it,
it can only be marketing,
but why?
or is it because they can be hacked?

I've never had a problem with my Nokias and I think I've had three or
four of them. My friends have Erikson, Motorola & Sony (in particulary
and everyone has had problems. This is just my observation, but I'm quite
happy with my Nokia. I had Siemens and Motorola as well and got rid of
them real quick. I prefer Nokia. Although I agree that they are getting
uglier and others are doing better designs. But I'm not sure I want to
risk changing to another even if it is better looking.

Are you talking about thier menus etc? I find that Nokia has the easiest
and most logical menus. I've tried other phones and they are so
uninutiative and horrible.

I've never had a locked phone. Belgium & Switzerland never locked their
phones. (don't know if Belgium is locking them now or not)

There are a number of good places to go for information on unlocking - I've
found this one to be very good.

Yes. I've no personal experience. My friend though it

All PAYG are locked. The economics don't work if they're not.
