Unbooked B&B in the British Isles?

For the past two summers, I've toured France, Germany, Italy and Austria during
June / July without booking ahead; and have always managed to get a decent bed
at the end of the day's travel (without being forced to try a 5star
establishment). Does anyone know what it's like in the Pembroke coast area of
Wales (or any other touristy area) - I've just got a feeling that B&Bs in the UK
now need to be booked in advance.
Thanks

Hi-
In the numerous times I've been in the British Isles, except for in the
big cities (which I try to avoid as much as possible to spend time in
the small villages and nature), we get up in the morning, decide where
we'd like to be at bedtime and go to the
local place to book a B&B. Don't know what the places are called but
they're designated by the uncapitalized letter i in a circle. I assume
it stand for information- not sure. We just call it the "I".
Anyway, they can book you a B&B for anywhere in the country and only
charge a little bit to do it. I've never had the sightest bit of
trouble- not only finding a place- but the type I want, the cost and the
location. And this is in the heart of tourist season sometimes.
Allows for some wonderful places to stay with no planning ahead
necessary. It's the first thing we do in the morning after leaving our
current B&B- so we don't have to worry all day about being somewhere
with no place to stay- and if we think we'll be arriving late at night,
they will be sure it's OK with the host before booking.
Enjoy Wales-
Susan

We've never even done that and have always found a decent place to stay. The
only time it was touch and go was in Cardiff on a Saturday of a Bank Holiday
weekend, but even then we found one with the generous help of another B&B
establishment which was full.
I would start looking about three to four in the afternoon (all B&Bs have a
small sign outside) and then ask the owner what the best sights are in the
vicinity as well as the best place for an evening meal. The owners of B&Bs
are a mine of info awaiting to be tapped. (sorry about the mixed metaphor!).
We would then do some more sightseeing and have an evening meal after which
we would return to the B&B and have a long talk (usually) with the hosts.
Great for getting to know the country.
