Oh no. Reassure me, wessie, that you're not one of these idiots who
believe that the French refusal to condone the slaughter of thousands of
Iraqis, is due to 'cowardice' ...

Thanx for the link.

This is in reference to the (suggested) returning of the French Air
Craft Carrier to her home port, after positioning herself in the E. Med.

Do you not think that your government was (is) trying to cover it's
options, all of them... despite the (extreme) rhetoric to the contrary.
I expect my government to do so. You simply choose to ignore very
objective facts.

Not withstanding that... I think an editor of the distinguished "Jane's"
may have said it best:

"I think the statement about it returning home might be just "today's
statement".

Nope, it's economic and (last) grasps at international influence in an
arena where her billing was secured more than 50 years ago. Yet today,
her merits could only covet a window seat at Le Tour.

Rwanda all but precludes the civilian argument for the French.

Not at all - just could not resist revisiting (perhaps trolling!) the
perceived French stereotype. I thought that the 2nd comment about Tony
Blair indicated that I was not being serious.

I am quite glad that Chirac and his chums are taking a stand against the
UK/US governments' position. This requires more courage than simply caving
in to US/UK demands. The BBC quoted some chap from Jane's - he suggests
that this is some kind of diplomatic symbology and could easily be reversed
if the French demands are met.

After this weekend's marches I am hoping that Blair realises that some sort
of debate is required. No way will there be a Thatcher/Falklands type
response if British troops are involved in a war on Iraq. Even his own
party are against him in large numbers.

Part of my studies at Cardiff Uni are on the topic of globalisation. The
Iraq situation is the subject of a series of lectures being given by Prof
John Lovering who is a high profile anti-war campaigner. He has covered the
history from the days of British Imperialism to the current day. His
lectures have remained objective and will continue tomorrow. He ended
today's lecture with the question, is the US a benign empire essential for
world peace? I look forward to what he has to say tomorrow.

I am doing a sociology degree, but find the globalisation issue
particularly interesting - perhaps spending 15 years working for Xerox and
being made redundant after my job moved to Hungary has something to do with
this.

'last grasps at international influence'. LOL !! That's not what almost
the _entire_ Security Council seems to think.

I was only aware of France having armed and trained the Tutsis. Going by
that criterion, the United States can not claim civility, either.

You might want to look at 'Human Rights Watch': "Arming Rwanda."

One wonders what "notes" France might be calling due... Like from
Belgium, their traveling companion in the above Rwanda.

Plezzzzz!

Hey, it 'doesn't really matter', as France's military might is so 'puny'
that no one can possibly be harmed by those weapons, right .......?

I think that French militarization is one of the more interesting
ones... look at their approach to NATO (which didn't serve them well
yesterday).

Today, MIGHT can come in very small packages... ask the British about
the French Exocet missiles. Or... just perhaps... a heavily armed Mirage
squadron, sortied from the de Gaulle in E. Med, refueling somewhere over
the airspace of Jordan and heading to the east but a bit to the north
also....
