I've been to many, many places and the UK officials take the 'interview'
the most serious of all of them.

No, I've just realised, it's the bit at the end of Let It Be when John says
something like "I hope we passed the audition"

That's what I suspected. Couple of things. If you think UK officials are
serious, US officials can be terrifying! Also, I've heard (and I've
heard it too many times to think it's idle chatter) that some UK
officials take particular pleasure in grilling US citizens, and FWIW
white South Africans. That said, most people from the UK enter the US
with nothing but a smile from the official, and vice versa.

That makes no sense- are you sure that's correct? You have to apply for
a work permit before entering the UK. You don't just turn up and ask for
one- and certainly not if you're a cuban dancer. You _can_ be deported
if you turn up with a permit, and the officials have reason to suspect
that they were illegally obtained etc., but if it's an official work
permit, _and_ is in order, there has to be very good reason indeed to
deport someone.

I woulds say unpredictable; some appear to be quite illiterate. Once we
have been admitted until *june 31.*
At which point my wife gets all agitated, and have have to tell her, in a
language that the guy would'nt understand, to cool down and keep her mouth
shut, since the guy was clearly challenged enough as it was, and you would
not want to make him look that stupid, would you?
Once I was admitted on an I-94W which had expired the previous day. We
were just connecting in the US, and I believe that had run out of blank
forms. Anyway, YMMV.
